How To Choose A Rug Size
Every time I post a picture of a room in our house, I always get asked, “What big rug is there?” We welcome questions to ask. I have it! Sometimes all you need is a framework to get started. But the size of the room in our house is less likely to be the size of the room in your house. When it comes to rugs, the size of the room matters! So with the launch of the Lolli rug line yesterday, we thought it would be a good time to talk about what size rug you need.
We have always had a king bed and I figured if you had a king bed you should have at least a 9×12 rug so I did. I thought it was just a rule. Our 9×12 area rug was like wall to wall rug and covered almost every inch of our floor. We kept it for a few years and finally bought an 8×10 which was a better fit for our room size and made it even LARGER because the flooring was visible around the edges.
In general, larger rooms need larger rugs to lay on the floor, and smaller rooms sometimes need smaller rugs to appear larger. If you want to know what size rug we recommend, keep reading! Below we share our tips for bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms (with rugs in our collection)!
As you can see, there are many sizes that will work for different bed sizes, so follow the instructions above. Especially with the space around the edges of your room (even 7 inches looks neat!) extending to both sides of the bed.
A Guide To The Perfect Rug Placement For Your Space
A living room is usually a very small place for people to stay. A floating rug in the middle of the room can make your space feel disconnected. Use rugs to bond them to the floor. I used to have a 10×14 around the house, but now it works like a 9×12! We followed the first guideline and made sure all seats had enough width on either side of the seat on the front mat. 9×12 worked for our direction!
But! Our last living room was narrower than it was tall and required 10×14 because we had 10″ wide, 8×10″ flashing across the entire room. So, we bought a 10×14 and put all the furniture on the carpet, and it felt very flat. Again, this depends on the size of your room and the placement of your furniture. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
Lastly, let’s talk about the dining room. We don’t have carpet in any of the dining rooms at the moment due to young children, but we actually did a rose in the breakfast nook (see below) and what it has done for the room is amazing. I totally agree now, especially how easy and convenient these rugs are to clean.
