Choosing A Rug For The Living Room – We’re back with one of our favorite topics: rugs. This is one of our most asked “how” and “what” topics. And we got it! It’s a big item that doesn’t come cheap, so I want to get it right away, because who wants to go back anyway? No one. So, if you are currently looking for a rug for your living room or want to spice it up, we hope these patterns will help you find the right one. There are many new carpets that we have purchased. enjoy; have a great time 🙂
One of the biggest mistakes we see (as we mentioned above) is “too small a rug.” However, today I will not only advise you to choose the right size, but also show you how to arrange it. It’s easy to say, “Don’t buy too small,” but we need to be more specific. So we’ve got recipes, rules, and general “do’s” to help you out (and some shopping tips, too). Let the (fun) rug survey begin…
Choosing A Rug For The Living Room
I know from personal experience how daunting it can be to find a rug for your living room. A few are cheap (we found some, don’t worry) and are a pain to return. But it’s the centerpiece of your living room, so it needs to look right. So let’s first look at the basic rules for each EHD approved deployment option…
How To Choose A Rug Color
Measure the size of the rug you want with painter’s tape to get an idea of how it will look. We promise to save this life.
If you have a large enough room and want all your conversation pieces (such as beds, chairs, coffee tables, etc.) to be on the carpet, make sure you leave about 8 inches from edge to edge of your furniture. carpet This way, your furniture will not look like a dangerous child on the edge of the subway platform. Consider the 8″ point of the official yellow line. Don’t go the other way.
Then leave yourself about 10″ to 18″ (and maybe 24″ if you have the space) from the carpet to the wall. If you get too close, your rug will overwhelm your space and look awkward with an “almost” rug.
The main exception to these rules is if your bed is backed up against a wall (or not pushed a few inches against the wall, which we recommend). Your rug can be moved a little closer to avoid taking up valuable shared space.
What’s The Best Dining Room Rug? Here Are All Our Best Tips And Tricks
This model is possible in these parts (and possibly the world). All your furniture can “play”, but make room for personality. Isn’t that what we want for all our carefully selected furniture?
For this, you need the front legs of the sofa and all the chairs located on it. Here you don’t play in “furniture lava” where the carpet is the only safe zone. Let the hind legs hang down and take up space.
Thanks to this arrangement, your room will be spacious, even if it is not. The rule of thumb here is to have about 1/3 of the width of the carpet under each piece.
For example, if your chair is 21 inches, make sure your rug is about 7 inches below that (give or take).
How To Choose The Right Rug Size For Your Living Room
In that time, Emily and Orlando have created a video on how to choose the perfect size rug, and if you’re a visual person (like me), these rules will help you understand why finding the right one is heaven. . :
“But EHD, I have a 5’x8” rug that fits my room perfectly. Can’t really use this? ” Fear not, unimaginative readers! You can place this beautiful vintage rug on a larger rug. Yes, it’s totally legit and looks great if you find the right pair.
An almost foolproof way to try this is to choose a natural jute-like rug as a large base and place a smaller rug (of a different color and material) on top. You can take the Emily and Jenny Kane image from the photo above and place your smaller rug in the center of the larger piece. But if you want to be really lazy, you can put them in the middle if the front leg of the seat is on one of them.
Looks good, but be careful. First, what does “move” mean? This means you have a rug under your coffee table, but no seat. I know, I’m shocked.
Rug Size And Style Guide
That’s the point. If your couch and chairs have a perfectly good carpet that’s an inch off, you won’t find us calling the carpet police. We do not recommend more than 5 inches between your sofa and carpet. One more and it seems too small and you may regret it.
Strange… to the shape of the carpet. There are more possibilities than the classic square. These types of rugs are perfect for rooms with irregular shapes (for example, if you have a corner fireplace) and are easy to slide and layer, like Emily in the living room of the mountain house.

But there’s no real rule for this, unless you buy in proportion to your sofa and the rug doesn’t at least have seat legs.
