Living Room Decor Ideas For A Refresh That Won’t Blow Your Budget
Some of these awesome budget decorating ideas involve a bit of DIY, but I promise they’re totally doable and worth the effort.
Custom window treatments can quickly blow a budget, but there are ways to get a custom look for less. Securing curtains from more affordable stores like HomeGoods, IKEA, and Overstock are great alternatives to more expensive options. I have white curtains from IKEA and green curtains from Overstock that I love and highly recommend.
Looking for more effects? Consider painting interior windows a deep charcoal gray or black (mine was painted with iron ore) and adding shades of bamboo.
Hanging tip: Hang the curtain above the window curtain and between the base of the ceiling (or crown molding) and wide enough so that the edge of the curtain extends beyond the side of the window.

I’m a big fan of adding drama with accent walls. Great options are finishing painting a hallway, adding bold and colorful walls to a bedroom, or creating a custom wood wall treatment. What do you rent? Removable or temporary wallpaper is a great way to update your background without making a long-term commitment.
Have you considered painting your ceiling? The ceiling is a great place to have fun with paint or wallpaper.
Batten style walls and clapboard walls are my favorite treatments to give a room an affordable and stylish look.
I have nothing against big box stores for home essentials, but vintage shopping is the best way to give your decor that extra push it needs for a personalized look. Choose a piece of furniture over a TV stand, replace plain art with a vintage oil painting, or replace a structural steel light fixture with a beautiful antique option.

Mixing plants is a very simple way to add life, texture and instantly brighten up a space. Need help converting fake plants to real? These low maintenance houseplants are my favorite plants for easy care and maintenance.
I’ve painted everything from windows, doors and walls to furniture and decor and I’m always amazed at the power of color. A simple coat of paint can dramatically change the look and feel of a room or breathe new life into an old piece.
Modifying an old fan or light fixture for your own style is a DIY project that even a beginner can do. I’m a big fan of adding vintage lighting to my home. If you also like the vintage look, this roundup of vintage-inspired school lights can help.
Don’t confine yourself to the closet. Changing furniture fixtures can make as dramatic a difference as changing a few bathroom handles or kitchen cabinet pulls.

9. Changing the decor I’m constantly changing and changing the decor, especially moving the pillows from room to room. This is one of my favorite ways to change and update a room for very little money.
Update your look by painting or replacing your front door, or if you’re feeling a little more daring and ambitious, try adding an old door or gate to a closet, pantry or laundry room.
Facebook Marketplace, Habitat for Humanity, and Auctions are great sources for unique and affordable vintage and antique doors.
The right sized area rug can instantly bring the room, floor furniture together and complete the overall look and feel of a room. Not to mention, it’s a great way to add color and texture.

You may be tempted to spend more time and effort decorating the rooms that your guests will see, but neglecting the bedroom is a bad idea. After all, you spend a third of your entire life in your bedroom, so it’s important to make it comfortable, cozy and welcoming. An unfinished bedroom may seem small and transient, but simply personalizing your space doesn’t mean you have to spend a small fortune to do so.
Whether you already have the bedroom essentials and need a little flair to complete the look, or you’re starting from scratch, we spoke to an expert stylist to get tips on affordable ways to decorate your bedroom.

Stephanie Beverly is an interior designer and lead artist at Twelve15 Design Studio based in Cincinnati, Ohio.
No, we’re not talking about Amazon (although we do love a good Prime deal). Look around your house for things you no longer use and put them in the bedroom, suggests Beverly.
“Buy your own house,” he says. “Often, people have style and decor items in their homes that can be used in the bedroom.” Sometimes, that trendy couch that doesn’t fit in the living room shows up right next to your bed.
Struggling with a small room? “Add mirrors strategically to make the room look bigger and show off more elements,” says Beverly. Hanging a mirror behind your bed or above your headboard can add extra natural light and complement a bare wall without spending a lot of money.

Look for used mirrors at thrift stores and flea markets. Decorating is easy with a coat of antique mirror paint and some glass cleaner.
Buying fine art can be expensive, and you don’t want to splurge on a hand-painted piece for your bedroom. Instead, Beverly suggests doing a simple painting or print of wall art or photography to fill the empty walls. The easiest way to disinfect a room is to leave the walls completely bare.
“In your bed, from your mattress to your sheets—it’s truly life-changing,” says Beverly. Even if you’re decorating a room on a budget, try spending a little money on a comfortable mattress or linen set.
A good night’s sleep is worth spending a few extra dollars. If you can’t afford a full set, rarely use a top sheet, but buy a nice fitted sheet instead.
How To Decorate Your Living Room For Cheap
If you want to give the bedroom a more elegant look, Beverly recommends updating the window treatments. “Choose window treatments that offer great versatility, or offer light interruption or filtering,” he says. “It’s important to pay attention to the lighting in your space and how it affects the look and feel.”
It’s no secret that buying less costs less. If you’re on a budget, consider giving yourself a minimalist look. Although it can seem sterile if you don’t get it right, keeping a simple color palette and organized pieces can help your room feel intentionally minimalist.
“Litres in a room can create space,” explains Beverly. “I like different light levels, so consider lamps with different light levels or lights on a dimmer switch.” Consider adding an overhead switch to really transform your room.
Have at least two or three sources of light in your bedroom. Calculate exactly how many lumens you need by multiplying 10-20 by the square footage of your space.
Charming But Cheap Bedroom Decorating Ideas • The Budget Decorator
Whenever a trend outgrows its size, changing bedroom decor becomes expensive. Instead, Beverly recommends splurging on trendy items and investing more in pieces you know will last for years to come.
If you don’t know where to start, it can sometimes be more expensive to buy a lot of things that you don’t immediately like. If you’re on a budget, there are plenty of design services you can still purchase.
“I think it’s also a great idea to contact a designer or decorator for advice on ideas for your bedroom,” says Beverly. “That small investment can save you time and money by giving you encouragement and direction.”
A fun way to keep your bedroom looking fresh and new is to change your bedding each season, says Beverly.
