Rugs add warmth and interest to a room and are one of the best ways to really define a space. They can help add variety to a space and give it a finished feel, but it’s not always easy to get them and know exactly what size works best for you. Today, we’re sharing a guide to help you choose the right size rug for your space, and we’re also sharing our favorite rugs.
How To Choose The Right Rug Size For Every Room
When buying a rug, the first thing to consider is the size, shape and layout of your room. A rug that is too small will make the room feel cramped, so you need a rug that is large enough. The oversized lugs feel overwhelming as well. That’s why measurement is so important.
You can choose from different layout options depending on the arrangement of your furniture. There are three main placements for furniture and carpet: just the front legs of the carpet, all furniture legs on the carpet, or all furniture except the coffee table off the carpet (see image below). If you want to separate all furniture from the carpet, except the coffee table, make sure the carpet is at least as wide as the sofa.
Once you have decided on the layout and size, use painters tape to mark the placement of the rugs in the room so that you can easily see them.
I use a very similar process when choosing a rug for my bedroom. Consider the shape of the room, pay attention to the placement of doors in the space, and be aware of other furniture in the room (ottomans, benches at the end of the bed, etc.). If you place it on the edge of a bench or bed, make sure the rug is large enough to sit on and is at least 12 inches away.
What Size Rug Do I Need For My Bedroom? Living Room? Dining Room?
Be sure to measure! We recommend choosing a rug that extends at least 12-24 inches from the edge of your bed.
You can also use masking tape or linen to mark the size of your bedroom rug.
Once you’ve determined the size of the rug that works best for your space, it’s time to choose the rug itself. The living room is often a popular spot in the home, so it’s important to choose a rug that will last in high traffic areas. Below we have collected our favorite and most durable rugs.
