How To Choose The Right Paint Color For Your Home

How To Choose The Right Paint Color For Your Home – Choosing the right color is not an easy task. Every home is different. Your decor is different from the pictures you pinned on Pinterest, your windows are different from the room you saw in that magazine, and your boyfriend’s perfect gray has made your living room look like a seagull is sad. I understand… I’m gone. However, there are a few things you can do to make the process a little easier.

I find Pinterest to be a very useful tool for deciding the colors of your decor. I have a Pinterest board for each room (bedroom, bathroom, living room, dining room, kitchen) and a board for paint colors. I pin pictures of rooms that inspire me, as well as rooms in colors that I like. When I’m finally ready to prepare a room, I look at my closet and see what catches my eye. More often than not, I find myself pinning many of the same colors. Once you find a few color names you like, you can search for specific colors on Pinterest and see other rooms where those colors are used. The colors are not always the same in your bedroom as they are on the website (we will talk about how to do this in tip #5), but it can still help reduce your search. And when I’m at the paint store, I always have my phone handy to download images from Pinterest to use.

The neutral colors are very versatile and can be matched with almost any color palette you choose for your furniture and decor. White opens the space, beige gives a warm and comfortable room, and gray gives a cold room. You can use soft colors of blue and green as soothing neutrals. I even do this in my master and bathroom.

Contrasting colors are good because they allow you to keep your room like a blank canvas. Then you can easily change your mind by adding or removing bright colors from your decor.

If you don’t mind repainting, don’t be afraid to be bold. Actually, I said the green light. Remember that bright colors can be seen as too strong and too easy when used as a color palette. For our house, I chose to use a variety of neutral colors so that I can easily switch if I feel like changing. It was a good decision, because my mind changed faster than a toddler eating Cheerios.

I chose a few similar colors that blend together and then used them multiple times throughout the house. It gives the whole house a cohesive feel and allows everything to flow and make sense. Some of our rooms are beige, some are gray, some are blue and some are green. Although I use different colors in almost every room, the whole house is calm and cohesive.

I use this trick every time I choose a color for a room. I want to bring some paint home and put it on the sofa, fabric, and floor. Then find a similar one. Using similar colors on the walls helps bring it all together. It makes the place open and serene. You can compare it with your other furniture such as fabric, linen, rugs, furniture, cushions and accessories.

How To Choose The Right Residential Paint Color

This is the most important advice for me. If you read my article on paint tips, you know that I’m a big fan of buying paint before committing to the whole cow. It saved me a lot of money and helped me narrow down my options. These little swatches are only about $3 each and I usually pick a few colors that I want to try on my walls. I just paint a large swatch directly on the wall and stare at it for a few days. This is to make sure that I can look at it every day in all different ways. Recently, I also received good advice from a reader. If you don’t want to paint directly on your wall, you can paint a large poster and stick it on the wall.

So these are my 5 tips. Hopefully this will help you narrow down your next color choice. I love it when you share your tips with me, so if you have one that works for you, leave a comment. I learned a lot from you! Have you ever stood in front of a wall of paint and wondered what you could do?

I’m a white walls girl, so when we moved into our house, we painted every room white. But when we recently remodeled our kitchen and chose the color for the walls, I knew I wanted to go for a creamier, warmer white to warm things up a bit. So I went to Sherwin Williams and found a paint that was still white, but warmer and a few shades darker than super white.

There are a few ways to make choosing the right color scheme easier, so let’s get started right away.

How To Pick The Right Paint Color

Make sure your color palette is set before you go to the paint store and get confused looking at the endless colors. At the very least, you should know 3-5 colors you want to use in your home (for everything, not just paint) so you have a starting point to work from. I wrote an article about how to choose your color scheme. Go read first!

If you look at the wall paint, you will see that there are many shades for the same color. For example, the color gray is shaded with red, green and red. They are all gray, but different colors or shades change the gray you see.

The best way to see the difference between different colors of the same color is to look at a wall of colors with all different colors so that you can compare them. In the picture above you can see different shades of gray. The bottom line is the darkest color in each vertical group which tells you what the shade is for that vertical line. The reason this is important is because you want to choose a color with the right undertone for your space. Choosing the wrong gray (or whatever color you want) with the wrong shade can make the wall look dirty or muddy and clash with the rest of your space. The goal is to find the right shade for your entire space and everything in it.

So how do you know which shade to go with? Well, it starts with the shades that already appear in your room. Let’s take the example of the kitchen and say you are trying to decide what color to paint the walls. The backsplash is white subway tile, the countertops are white quartz with some marbling, and the cabinets are light gray. The easiest way to identify the shade in the backsplash, countertops and cabinets is to match the color and hold the color in the color family and see if the white subway tile is warm white, cool white, yellow or red white .

Choose Paint Colors With A Color Wheel

Do the same for the cabinets and counters and pay attention to the nuances of your kitchen. The general rule is that you want to match or complement the current shade of your space. So if your cabinets are gray with red undertones, your subway tile backsplash is white with red undertones, and your countertops are white with yellow undertones, you should choose a wall color with red undertones.

Contrast refers to the difference between light and dark colors in your home. Contrast is good because it keeps things interesting and doesn’t seem boring or empty. To achieve contrast in your home, you want to use light and dark colors when choosing colors or other finishes and furniture. Going back to the kitchen example, you wouldn’t want to do dark wood with black cabinets and a dark backsplash because there’s no contrast. Everything is dark so there are no different colors and it will look very heavy. A better option is to choose a classic white quartz countertop to cut all the darkness away.

Paint colors can look completely different depending on the light and time of day. For example, Alaina’s kitchen island looks light gray in this picture, but at different times of the day with different lights and angles, it looks blue here. Crazy right? !
