Choosing the right rug is a key step in designing a room. “Rugs are basically the anchors of your space,” says interior designer Tina Ramchandani.

When chosen and cut correctly, a rug can add warmth, pull your furniture together, and even make a room appear larger. In open concept styles or multi-purpose spaces, rugs can help define sections for each space.

There are many standard carpet sizes that you can find in your search. Below, Ramchandani advises on choosing the right size rug for each room in your home, based on factors such as furniture placement, room size and shape.

New Home Decorating Mistakes To Avoid

Quick Tip: Just want to buy? Check out our selection of the best places to buy rugs online.

A common mistake that homeowners make is choosing a regular rug and thinking it will work in every room – it doesn’t. In fact, carpets are never the same. Each room has unique considerations to consider when purchasing a rug.

While the bed is the centerpiece of most living rooms, the rug brings it all together. For this reason, it is important that the size of the carpet allows you to fill the main living area.

Play here, play in style. Squares and rectangles are obvious, but oval and round rugs add visual interest. “As long as the structure supports the furniture, you can have fun,” says Ramchandani.

Quick Tip: It’s better to buy rugs that are too big for your space and have them fit for a rug cleaning service instead of rugs that are too small. However, please leave carpet sizing to the professionals.

Enjoying the entrance and hallway rugs is something Ramchandani likes. “Unusual carpets can be used here, because most of the furniture is outside the sides of the floor,” he said.

Just like the living room, the kitchen rug should be comfortable with the furniture on it. Tables and chairs, in particular, you want to make sure that the chairs have enough room so that they still fit on the rug when removed from the table.

How To Choose The Rug Size?

Kitchen rugs aren’t for everyone (especially those prone to spills), but when they blend well with the space, they can make a room that feels colder than all the stoves and appliances, a little hotter.

As with any other room, there are rug size rules if you want smaller sofas near your sink, island hallway, or rugs in the kitchen area.

Dormitory mattresses are placed under the bed so that your feet have a warm place when you wake up. Because of this, the size of this rug will depend on the size of your bed, the furniture around it, and how much space you want to put under the bed.

What Size Rug Should Go Under A King Bed?

When it comes down to it, the rules for rug size are pretty simple: your furniture fits snugly around it, there’s at least 12 inches of breathing space around your floor, and the shape of your rug matches the shape. of the furniture on the ground, the space, you will be the interior designer.

If a large room needs multiple rugs to define different areas, such as an open floor plan, the same rules apply to each individual area. If, however, there is no furniture on the carpet surface in the room, such as corridors and entrances, the rules are a little less, and will really have the size and style.

Either way, measuring the space before you buy will help give you a general idea. It’s always better to buy a bigger one at worst and then exchange. After all, says Ramchandani, “there’s nothing worse than too little carpet.” I am often asked how to choose the right rug under the table, under the bed, in the entryway, and everywhere else! And since we’re on the subject, we believe in one design rule – you need to choose the right size rug for your space! I have a great blog about choosing the right rug (HERE) – hey, even Joanna Gaines has changed her way from choosing rugs that are too small for the scale of the room and the furniture to the right size. Let me show you some tips for some of the changes we’ve made so far.

When decorating my sister’s bedroom, we tried two different rugs! Pictured above is the 8×10 charcoal grill I originally ordered, but it wasn’t there when I took the picture. So I painted on a light rug that was 6×9, very small in space and fun to see the light against the dark.

In this small room we made this metal bed 6×9 Queen. The rug matches the wall perfectly! (see changes here)

We made a queen bed with this 8×10 rug. We wanted to make it bigger because it’s open and it breaks up all the gold floors and the gold wall.

I made an 8×10 for my sisters room to brighten the room and contrast the dark rug. You can find the rug here.

Yes, we do it on the carpet! It really adds a lot to the room. We made this 5×7 rug for this girls room.

I used this rug here! I love how it brings out the color of the wall. (see more about this room here).

In our camera conversion, we went from a 9×12 matte to a 6×9! It’s a queen bed and fits the carpet and room perfectly! The carpet is about 2 feet away from the bed (Find room and carpet repairs HERE).

Again, notice that the carpet is not under the nightstand in this dressing room. It is 8×10 with a queen bed. (Find the candy and rug here).

How To Choose The Perfect Area Rug For Your Room

I made this change for my friend Amy. We commissioned their rugs for their master bedroom, which is a great way to work your favorite rug into a smaller space, and a great way to save money if high-end rugs aren’t in your budget (see more here ). Check it out here.

It’s a small room – but it’s a great example of how we can adapt the rug to the style of the room. I usually roll flat rugs to break up the pattern of the bed, but this goes the length of the bed. It’s also good to show that a rug can add so much to a space, even a rug. (You can find this mod HERE and the mat HERE ).

In our bedroom remodel, we made a king size bed with an 8×10 rug, and I actually showed how a light rug would look in black! Find both options for this change.

And for those who are wondering if they should put a carpet on top – YES! Rugs are always a great way to define a space and add a pop of color if you want! (You can find bedroom decor and rugs here).

Living Room Area Rugs: Placement, Size, And Style

You can see how I put two rugs on our front porch “because you know there’s lots of plants” which was small in itself. I spread out the rugs I had, at least the width of the door. I recently ordered a 3×5 rug for the back door, can’t wait
