Even carpeted rooms can benefit from adding a rug. I’ll share some tips on how to install a bedroom rug and how to choose the right size rug for your bedroom. While we’re at it, I’m sharing my next bedroom design idea below!

How To Pick A Rug For Bedroom
Choosing a rug that is too small for your bed is a common mistake and can make your room feel smaller and unbalanced. The 8’x10′ rug size is very popular as it fits both queen and king size beds. Let’s talk about the size of the rug in relation to the size of your bed!
Rug Size For Small Rooms: Bedroom, Living Room & Office
A 9’x12′ area rug is large, but if you’re working with a king bed, it’s standard and I like to use it when there’s enough room. This type of size will give you enough space to cover both sides of the bed and the end of the bed.
An 8’x10′ rug would also work under the king bed. If you’re working with a small master bedroom, I recommend keeping the rug this size to make it look larger, as it won’t take up too much space.

The picture above is our old living room. We had a queen bed with an 8’x10′ area rug underneath. As you can see, it’s big enough to fit an entire bed, and the bench has more space. There is also enough space for a bedside table.

Rugs are one of my favorite ways to add warmth and interest to a room and really define a space. They help to transform and complete the space, but it is not easy to buy them and know exactly what size will fit in your space. Today we’re sharing a guide to help you choose the right size for your space, and we’re sharing our favorite rugs!
The first thing to consider when buying a rug is the size, shape, and layout of the room. A rug that is too small can make a space feel cramped, so you want to make sure the rug is large enough to fit the space. The same thing happens with tired, oversized rugs. This is why measurement is important.

Depending on how you want to arrange your furniture, you can choose from different carpet options. There are three main furniture options for carpets: only the front legs on the carpet, all the furniture legs on the carpet, or all the furniture on the carpet except the coffee table (use the preview we created below). If you choose all upholstered furniture except the coffee table, the rug should be as wide as your sofa.
Once you’ve decided on the location and size, you can use painter’s tape to mock up the placement of the rug to visualize the rug in your room.
Use the same process when choosing a rug for your bedroom. Look at the shape of the room, note where the door is placed, and look at other furniture in the room (such as an ottoman, end of bed bench, etc.). If you have a bench or ottoman at the end of your bed, you want the rugs to be large enough to sit on and spaced 12 inches apart.
Be sure to measure! We recommend choosing a rug that is at least 12-24 inches long at the end of the bed.

You can use painter’s tape or bed sheets to determine the size of your bedroom closet.
Once you’ve decided on the right rug size for your space, it’s time to choose your own rug! In most cases, the living room is the most popular area of the house, so it’s important to choose a rug that can stand up to high traffic. We have selected the most favorite and powerful raps for you and shared them below.

How To Choose The Perfect Area Rug For Your Room
Check out our various packages through the links below and start designing your bedroom today! I am often asked how to choose the right size rug for under the dining room table, under the bed, in the front door, wherever. ! While we’re on the subject, I believe in one design rule – you need to choose a rug that’s the right size for your space! I have an old blog post about choosing the right size rug ( here ) – yes, even Joanna Guinness has changed her approach from choosing a rug that’s too small for the size of the room or furniture to the right size rug. Here are some tips from past changes.
We tried two different rugs in the sisters bedroom! Pictured above is an 8×10 charcoal rug that I originally ordered, but it wasn’t here when the photo needed to be taken. And I photographed the 6×9 tapestry, too small for the space, and I was interested in seeing light-in-the-dark poems.
For this small room, we made a queen metal bed with a 6×9 rug. The rug is perfect for wall to wall! (See this change here)
For this queen bed, we made this rug 8×10. I wanted to go big because there was space and it breaks up all the gold floors and gold wallpaper.
How Do I Figure Out The Right Size Rug To Buy?
In my sisters bedroom, I made an 8×10 light in the room by contrasting the dark carpet. You can find carpets here.
In this little room we have a 5×7 queen size bed that really pulls the whole place together! Find the fabric here.
Yes, we do carpet on carpet! It adds so much to the room. We did a 5×7 on this leg in the little girls room.
I used a rug here! Love how it pops off the wall color. (See details of this room here).
How To Choose A Rug Size
With this bedroom makeover, we went from a 9×12 rug to a 6×9! It’s a queen bed and the carpet and room are perfect! The carpet is 2 meters from the bed (build a bedroom here and find a carpet here).
Notice again the change in this bedroom, the carpet is not under the bedroom. It is 8×10 and has a queen bed. (Find fabric here and rugs here).
I made this modification for my friend Amy. We made her a rug for our great room, and it’s a great way to create a rug that you want to work with in a small area, and a great way to save money if the above rug isn’t a budget rug (See the change here) – drill here.
It’s a small room – but it’s a good example of how we’ve changed the rug to match the style of the room. I usually run the rug horizontally to break up the shape of the bed, but this was the length of the bed. It’s good to show how much a rug can add to a space, even with fabric. (Find this rug here and this rug here ).
