How To Pick A Red Lipstick For Your Skin Tone
Red lipstick is like the little black dress of the makeup world. Versatile, essential and elegant, it can be worn by anyone, adding sophistication to any look, day or night. Also, it can be quite an intimidating sight when you see so many red lipsticks on the market. There are no hard and fast rules for choosing a red lipstick that matches your skin tone, but some basic guidelines can help you narrow down your options.
We caught up with celebrity makeup artist Latisha Nicole Rankin to find out how to find the best red lipsticks for all skin tones. We’re sure with a little persistence (and lots of swatches), you’ll find your favorite red below.

A good red lipstick can be bold. But with so many different skin tones and undertones, finding the right shade takes a bit of trial and error. Keep these tips in mind when shopping for the perfect red.
The Perfect Valentine’s (or Any Day Of The Year) Red Lip
Darker skin can handle more intense colors like deep reds and reds with blue undertones. Choose wine, berry and brick reds – they will complement your dark complexion perfectly. We’re fans of Bite Beauty’s Red Velvet Lip Pencil Power Move Creamy Matte Lip Pencil ($13) and Adore’s Kjer Weiss Lipstick ($30).
Olive skin works best with yellow or orange-red (think: coral and poppy). Fuchsia and any other color with cool undertones will whiten your complexion. For fiery shades, try Charlotte Tilbury Hot Lips 2 in Red Hot Susan ($37) or Maybelline’s Color Sensational The Mattes ($8 in Rich Ruby).
If you have a medium skin tone, you have more options to choose red lipstick. Both cool and warm colors will complement you, but be aware that coral can make your skin look dull, especially if you have cool undertones. TryWet n Wild’s Fire Edition Mega Last High-Shine Lip Gloss ($3) or Becca Cosmetics Ultimate Lipstick Love in Rouge ($20).
With a high-shine lipstick, gently exfoliate your lips before applying to ensure a smooth finish. And to tone down any excess shine, try sprinkling a setting powder on top for a slightly matte finish.
Orange Lipsticks For Every Skin Tone — 2021 Reviews
Fair skinned people can wear bright red to make their fair skin pop, but they usually look better in dark reds or berry reds with blue undertones like cranberry. Try Pat McGrath Labs Matterance Lipstick ($38) in Elson 013 or Jane Iredale Triple Luxe Long Lasting Natural Moisturizing Lipstick ($35) in Gwen.
The best red lipsticks for fair skin are those that complement your skin’s natural pink hue. Look for cool-toned reds with blues and purples (rather than oranges) for a flattering effect. The best part about Cool Red? They can also whiten teeth. Try MAC Powder Kiss Lipstick in Werk, Werk, Werk ($22) or Glossier Generation G in Zip ($18).
There are a few in the world of reds that are universally flattering. Rankin’s favorite? MAC Retro Matte Lipstick in Ruby Woo ($19). “It really works for all skin tones because the blue shade of this lipstick is perfect,” she says. “Often, other cosmetic companies add too much yellow or orange to their red lipsticks, which makes the lipstick look too bright on certain skin tones. Ruby Woo is a universal red that can be worn proudly by anyone, regardless of skin tone. That so what. “
For an affordable option, try the Maybelline Color Sensational Made for All Lipstick Collection ($5 each), a color option that flatters the colors of all skin tones.
