Choosing the right size rug is a key step when designing a room. “A rug is basically the anchor of your room,” says interior designer Tina Ramchandani.

When chosen and sized correctly, rugs can add warmth, bring your furniture together, and even make a room appear larger. For open concept layouts or multi-functional spaces, rugs also help separate each area to define sections.

There are several standard carpet sizes you can find in the search. Below, Ramchandani offers advice on choosing the right size rug for each room in your home, based on factors such as furniture arrangement, room size and shape.

How To Choose The Right Rug

Quick tip: Do you just want to shop? Check out our picks for the best places to buy rugs online.

A common mistake homeowners make is choosing a standard rug and thinking it will work in any room—it doesn’t. In reality, rugs are never one-size-fits-all. Every room has its own considerations to consider when buying a rug.

While the sofa is the focal point of most living rooms, the rug is what holds it all together. Therefore, it is important that the dimensions of the rug allow you to fill the main seating area.

From there you have to play with the forms. Squares and rectangles look obvious, but oval and round rugs can add visual interest. “As long as the shape supports the furniture in the room, you can have fun with it,” says Ramchandani.

How To Pick The Perfect Sized Rug For Your Space

Quick tip: It’s better to buy a rug that’s too big for your space and get it sized by a rug sizing service than buying one that’s too small. But leave carpet sizing to the professionals.

Having fun with entryway and hallway rugs is something Ramchandani loves. “This is an area where you can use a one-size-fits-all rug because the furniture is usually on the edge of the room,” he says.

As in the living room, the dining room rug should closely match the furniture above it. Especially with tables and chairs, you want to make sure there is enough space for the rug to stand firmly when the chairs are pulled away from the table.

Rules For Choosing A Dining Room Rug + Pretty Rug Souces

Kitchen rugs aren’t for everyone (especially those that shed easily), but when placed correctly in a room, all the tiles and appliances can make a room that feels a little warmer.

As with any space, whether you prefer a smaller rug by the sink, a runner around your island, or a rug in the eat-in kitchen, there are a few rules for rug size.

Bedroom rugs are placed under the bed for a warm landing for your feet when you wake up. Therefore, the size of this rug will depend on the size of your bed, the surrounding furniture and how much you want to fit under the bed.

How To Select The Right Size Area Rug

The rules for measuring a rug are pretty simple: as long as your furniture sits comfortably on it, there’s at least 12 inches of breathing space around your floor, and the shape of your rug echoes the rug. furniture in the room, you are on your way to becoming an interior designer.

If multiple rugs are required to define different areas in a larger room, such as in an open floor plan, the same rules apply for each area. Conversely, if there is no furniture on the carpet in the room, e.g. in entries and entries the rules are a little less specific and you can really have fun with size and shape.

Regardless, it’s important to measure your space before buying anything to give you a general starting point for size. At worst, it’s always better to buy the bigger one and resize later. After all, says Ramchandani, “there’s nothing worse than a rug that’s too small.” Not only can rugs change the look of an entire room by adding splashes of color and texture, choosing the right size and placement can make a bedroom feel larger. Even a carpeted bedroom can benefit from adding a layered rug on top. I will share some tips on bedroom rug placement and how to choose the right rug size for your bedroom. Since we’re about to move, I’m also sharing design ideas for our future bedroom below!

Rugs For Small Spaces

Choosing a rug that is too small for your bed is a common mistake and can actually make your room look smaller and feel unbalanced. The 8’x10′ rug size is the most popular because it fits both queen and king beds. Let’s talk about the size of the rug depending on the size of your bed!

A 9’x12′ rug is pretty big, but it’s well proportioned when you’re working with a king bed, and I prefer to use it where there’s plenty of room. A blanket of this size will give you enough space to cover both sides of the bed as well as the ends of the bed.

An 8’x10′ rug can also be used under the king bed. If you’re working with a smaller master bedroom, I recommend going this size so the rug doesn’t cover too much of the floor, which can look overwhelming.

One of the biggest mistakes we see (as we’ve mentioned before) is “too small a rug.” But today I will tell you not only how to choose the right size, but also how to assemble it.
