The Right Size Rug For Living Room – One of our favorite topics: carpet. This is one of the most frequently asked topics, along with “how” and “what”. We got it! It’s NOT cheap, so you want to fix it first, because who wants to return a rug? Nobody. So, whether you’re currently looking for a living room rug or just want to spice things up, we hope these formulas help you find what you’re looking for. We also stock a wide range of new carpets. Interesting 🙂
One of the biggest mistakes we see (as mentioned earlier) is “the mattress is too small”. However, today I’m going to show you not only how to choose the right size, but also how to get the right fit. It’s easy to say, “Don’t go small,” but we like to go a little smaller here. That’s why we have formulas, guidelines, and general “don’ts” (and some trading picks) that can help. Let the (fun) carpet exploration begin…
The Right Size Rug For Living Room
I know from personal experience how daunting it can be to find carpet for your living room. Most of them are unavailable (we found some, don’t worry) and it’s hard to come back. But since it’s the main part of your website, it needs to look right. So let’s first look at the details of the rules for each EHD approved configuration option…
Living Room Rug Placement: The Ultimate Guide
Measure the size of the carpet you want to use painter’s tape to see how it will feel. We promise it’s a lifesaver.
If you have a large enough room and want your conversation pieces (such as sofas, accent chairs, coffee tables, etc.) to be on top of your rugs, leave about 8 inches from the edge of the furniture. rise So your furniture won’t look like a dangerous child on the edge of a subway platform. Keep the 8-inch point as the official yellow line. OR NOTHING WILL HAPPEN.
Then place it about 10-18 inches (or 24 inches if you have the space) from the carpet to the wall. If you get too close, the carpet will overwhelm your space and look like an awkward wall. – tapestry.
The rule of thumb for these rules is if your sofa is against a wall (or a few inches against the wall, which is recommended not to overload). You can move closer together so you don’t lose valuable common property assets.
Rug Size And Style Guide
This layout is the place to go for these parts (and maybe the world). All your furniture will have a place to “play”, but it will be special. Isn’t that what we want for all our carefully selected furniture?
So you want the front legs of the bed and all the chairs above it. You won’t be playing “furniture lava” here, which is still the only safe lane. Allow the back legs to hang and hold the ground.
This arrangement will make your room look spacious even if it is not. A rule of thumb is about 1/3 of the width of the carpet pieces.
For example: If your seat is 21 inches, make sure it’s 7 inches below the mattress (give or take).
Rug Size: How To Buy The Correct One For Your Space
Emily and Orlando put together a video on how to choose the perfect size rug, and if you’re a visual person (like me), it’ll help you understand why these rules will help you find your match in heaven. :
“But EHD, I have an old 5’x8 rug in my living room that fits PERFECTLY. Can’t I really use it?” The scanner made a miracle! You can fold this beautiful old rug over a larger rug. Yes, it’s totally legal and you can look great if you match it right.
An almost foolproof way to try this is to choose a large pocket rug, such as natural jute, and then layer a smaller rug (of different colors and materials) over it. You can take the image of Emily and Jenny Kane from the images above and place your small rug in the middle of a larger piece. But if you want to cheat even more, you can center them if the front seat legs are on one of them.
You look good, but you have to be careful. First, what does “floating” mean? This means that the carpet is under the coffee table, but not under the chair. I know, SHOCK.
Guide To Rug Sizes: How To Choose The Right One
Here’s the thing. You can’t call the carpet police if you have a perfectly good carpet within inches of the couch and chairs. We recommend no more than 5 inches between the seat and the carpet. Also, it will look really small and maybe you will be disappointed.
Let’s be surprised by the pictures. There are more options than the classic rectangle. These types of rugs are great for oddly shaped rooms (if you have a corner fireplace) and are easy to fold and fold like Emily did in her room.

But there’s no real rule for this, except that you buy according to your sofa and that at least most of the sofa’s legs are carpeted.
