Because of its size and the fact that its states are not all connected, the United States contains examples of every type of climate in the world. The tropical regions of Hawaii and Florida, the dry deserts of the southwestern states, the polar regions of Alaska, and the arctic climatic pockets of the Rocky Mountain West, are just a few examples. Most of the 48 contiguous states, however, are classified as temperate, with lots of rain, hot summers and mild winters, or continental, with mild summers and very cold winters.
