When laying laminate flooring, the two most important things to consider are where to start laying the first plank and the tools you use to cut the laminate flooring.

There are two things I think about before I decide to put the first line to start installing. What are straight walls and what are difficult areas to tackle?

Best Way To Prep Your Floor For Tile Installation

Judgment must be made. Ideally, in a regular square room, I would start laying the floor on the longest and straightest wall if it matches the direction I want the floor to run (I usually lay the floor in the same way as the light comes in). Once you get two or three straight lines together, it’s usually easy to move after that.

That can be a four-door space, quick and easy to manage, now at the beginning of the installation as you move the floor back and forth a little. This area will eventually become more difficult to handle when you have less room to maneuver (you can find more information about installing laminate doors below the page).

Before you can lay the laminate floor, you must allow the boards to adjust by leaving them in the room where you will be laying them for at least two days. Check the instructions that come with the board as this will help prevent the floor from shrinking/expanding too much after installation.

Why Is My Floor Bubbling?

If I’m putting a laminate floor over a wood floor, I make sure all the screws are covered/hidden and the nail heads are driven under the surface first.

Concrete floors must be leveled and, in a worst-case scenario, latex or other leveling compounds may be required to ensure the floor is level enough for floating installation.

A waterproofing membrane must be installed before you can install laminate flooring on a concrete surface.

Unless the cover strip is placed over the expansion joint because the skirting board is already there, I’ll generally shorten the skirting board temporarily and once it’s done remove it and put it on the other side to fix it later. This will reduce the amount of time you spend working on the finished floor after it is installed in case you damage it.

How To Lay Laminate Flooring

Clean all day. Any clay on the floor will scratch it, so place the saw on the opposite side of where you will start the first row. In the middle of the job, use a cardboard pack from the floor to cover and protect most of the laid floor, then switch and lay in the other part of the room for the second half.

Unless you’re putting a wood floor between two rooms, you’ll need to work on each door where the floor ends and the transition border is there. This should be installed so that when closed it is below the center of the door and thus not visible from either side except when the door is open.

Move the center edge of the door to the door frame, then locate each cut for the subfloor and floorboards. Place the board face down and place it on the bottom wall against the architrave. With a thin hand saw, saw the bottom of the architrave and the wide door so that the floor can slide neatly under it. By cutting into the middle of the door, you leave enough room to expand without making a big hole after laying the floor.

I use a sharp chisel to gently clean it underneath if necessary. I’ve never tried cutting laminate flooring around architraves or door frames because you have to leave an expansion gap. This gap can instead be hidden under the architrave frame and moulding, making it look as if it is installed on a laminate roof. It’s also 10 times easier to do!

Is Luxury Vinyl A Good Choice For Bedrooms?

Sometimes the easiest place to start laying laminate flooring is the door, because it is more difficult to finish.

On this page you will find a lot of in-depth information about installing laminate flooring and door finishes.

Then mark the bottom of the door in the same way. Mark the door open and closed on both sides if the floor or frame is out of position and cut/flatten to any limits to work out the dimensions.

Every time I put down laminate flooring, I remove the door and cut the hole first, then make it right out.

Laminate Flooring With Underfloor Heating

Laminate floors should be placed in the same direction as the light coming into the room, or if there are windows around the longest wall.

Once you have determined the best subfloor, it will likely be offered in rolls or as square tiles. If the square tiles are only enough to lower the first few rows, then place the tiles in the opposite direction where the floorboards are going down. It’s easier to trip over and sometimes harder to dust than a subfloor, so lay out everything you need to get started. Also shake the basement tiles like bricks, so you don’t just lay a grid of tiles. This helps keep them stable and increases strength by spreading the load.

If you also have subfloor rolls, they should be placed on the other side of the floor and tapped on the joints to prevent them from breaking or falling on the floor.

Lying from left to right with the tongue facing the wall, you will find the first board with the ends close together. Use an 8-10mm spacer to leave an expansion gap around the perimeter. The last board must be cut to length. To do this, put it back to the front, place it 10 mm from the wall and mark the end of the line on it. You can use tape instead, measure from the wall to the end of the line and subtract 10mm. Remember that when you are ready to make a groove, you should always measure the next board from the edge of the tongue, and vice versa. Square the line across the board with Combination or Tri-Square.

How To Start The First Row On Laminate Floor If The Wall Is Not Straight

The best way to place a mark when you face an obstacle or a corner is as shown in the image below, by briefly pressing the next line / mark. This will give you something to measure from when the wall is not exactly 90° and/or not square as indicated by the shape of the board to be cut. You can mark the missing board by measuring the gap, remember to account for the expansion gap.

When I first learned how to lay laminate floors, I found that several boards came together, got to the end of the row and when I laid the last board in the row for the first time it appeared!

It can depress you if you let it. Take five minutes at the beginning to allow time for the tongue to click and mix. With one shelf flat on the floor, the next should be about 30°. As you push the tongue into the groove, rock the board up and down as you lower it and it should slide into the groove. Every type of floor is different, but once you find the right angle to hold the board as you push it, you get it and you go faster. When working alone, I sometimes put the whole floor pack on top of the laid boards, so that the joints don’t pop up and come out.

All types of man-made boards such as MDF, plywood and laminates with adhesives and resins will remove saw blades faster than natural wood. I only cut the floor with a hard hand saw designed specifically for laminate or usually with the low laminate blade on my jigsaw.

Why Is My Laminate Flooring Lifting?

When laying a laminate floor, avoid repeated movements and random movement of layers.

When you cut the last board of the first row to length, you can use the cut to start the next row, as long as it is 150mm long.
