History has not been kind to the Madagascar elephant. Standing nearly 10 feet tall and weighing up to 1,000 pounds, scientists believe this camel’s flying cousin went extinct in the 17th century, in part because humans stole its eggs. Large enough to feed their own families or reuse. like big bottles of rum. Or both.

Recently, the designation of the heaviest bird in history has been thrown into doubt by the discovery of a slightly larger, unrelated Dromornis strito, an Australian giant that went extinct 20,000 years ago.

But a new study aims to reclaim the elephant bird’s elusive title. After examining taxonomic exchanges and collected remains of elephant birds, researchers say a member of a previously unknown bird species can weigh more than 1,700 pounds, making it the largest known bird.

For centuries, scientists have competed to collect and display the largest ivory bird bones. But “no one has done any real, consistent research on these birds,” said James Hansford, a paleontologist at the Zoological Society of London and author of a study that left the feathered giants in taxonomic disarray. As a result, more than 15 elephant birds have been recognized in two species (a large number of species, the name of a group of closely related species).

To unravel the genealogy of the elephant, Dr. Hansford hopes to find out where one species ends and another begins. He traveled the world with a tape recorder and examined thousands of ivory bird bones. He then used data on birds and modern algorithms to determine how large birds could grow.

His findings, published Wednesday in the journal Royal Society Open Science, show three elephant birds instead of two, and four species instead of 15: Mulleornis modestus, Aepyornis hildebrandti, Aepyornis maximus and Vorombe titan.

One of these species, A. maximus, thought to be the heaviest elephant bird, until a British scientist announced in 1894 that he had discovered an even larger species, Aepornis titanus. Other researchers reject this conclusion, saying that A. Titan. An unusually large member of the A. maximus family.

But reports from Dr. Hansford, A. Titan is not only a species of its own, but a distinct species of the larger elephants, as shown by the size and shape of these three large bones. He named Vorombe titan species and species; vorombe is a Malagasy word meaning “big bird”.

“They thought the second largest elephant bird, Aepyornis maximus, was the largest and estimated it to be around 400-500 kilograms, which is correct,” Dr Hansford said. (One hundred kilograms equals 220 pounds, about one-fifth the weight of a grand piano.) But the newly discovered species is “much larger, weighing up to 800 kilograms, perhaps twice the body mass of A. maximus.”

Dr. Hansford said his study was the most rigorous study of elephant birds in over a century and combined outdated names with more accurate names.

“Many scientists in the 19th and early 20th centuries tried to claim a new species based on very little evidence, such as one bone being a few millimeters longer than the other,” he said. “It’s not just about size, it’s about what other shapes show.”

Although the fate of elephant birds was sealed long ago, Dr. Hansford said his work could help conservation efforts in Madagascar, where many unique plants and animals are under threat.

“These birds have co-evolved with the flora and fauna of Madagascar for millions of years,” he said. “To help conserve some of Madagascar’s endangered plants, we need to understand the ecological interactions we’ve lost.”

Scientists Reveal What May Be The Largest Flying Bird Ever

An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated the approximate weight of a grand piano. The device weighs about 1,000 pounds, not 220.

A version of this article appears in the New York edition, Section D, page 2: Air Madagascar: Even in death, elephant birds triumph over competition. Print Order | Today’s Paper | The Andean condor (Vultur gryphus, andin condor) is the largest flying bird in Peru and one of the largest birds in the world. It is mostly black with white feathers on the neck and wing parts. The head is hairless and red.

Since then, it has been an important animal in the mythology and traditions of the Andean world, such as for the Incas, who considered it immortal and the vision of Yananpacha, from above the earth, from the sky and from the future.

The condor lives not only in Peru, but also in Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, and Chile.

The Andean condor is the largest bird in the world. Its habitat extends from the coast to the highest parts of the Andes. It can fly at high altitudes and reaches 7000 m above sea level.

In appearance, it is usually black, but it has a distinctive white collar. His head is always seen with eyebrows.

For experts such as the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), the Andean condor plays an important ecological role as a scavenger because it speeds up the decomposition process of dead animals, thus reducing the risk associated with the slow decay of animals.

Part of this species is also characterized by a good smell, an unusual quality in birds. It can live more than 50 years in the field and up to 80 years in captivity. Its height is about 142 cm and its wingspan is 330 cm.

Condom weight is 11-15 kg for men and 8-11 kg for women. Size 142 cm, wingspan 330 cm (wings open).

As you read, it is a large black bird with white feathers on its neck and parts of its wings. The scalp is red, and the beak has sharp edges.

Andean male condoms have a crest and expand over time on the face and neck.

The condor is distinguished by its beautiful flight and long flights. Because it is a heavy bird, it uses the air currents in the mountains. This means that it can stay in the air for long periods of time, so it can sometimes be seen in the Atlantic and Pacific regions as the condor takes advantage of strong ocean currents.

Their diet is mainly based on dead animals. In some cases, it may come to hunt small animals. Because of its long flight, the condor can travel long distances in a short time in search of food.

A condor can detect its food by the smell of decaying gas.

The distribution area extends through the Andes from northern Colombia to southern Patagonia in Chile and Argentina, through Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia.

This condor lives in the highlands such as the Colca Valley (1,131 km southeast of Lima), in Arequipa; although it can also be seen in some parts of the coast. The condor is associated with Andean culture and mythology. Due to these and other factors, it is in danger of extinction.

The condor’s habitat covers the entire Andean region, and populations can be seen in Peru, in Arequipa, Cusco, Apurimac, Lima, Junín, and Huancavelica. There is a joint effort between the public and the private sector to save this species.

To understand the natural habitat of the condor in Peru, we must move to the cliffs at an altitude of 1000 to 5500 meters above sea level, where they build their nests and raise their young.

In Peru, one of the most famous and best canyons to appreciate the condo crossing is in the city of Arequipa in the Colca Canyon (how to get there), this canyon is one of the deepest in the world and that’s why. this is it is the perfect nesting ground for the hundreds of condors that come out every day to find food to feed their young.

Another place that has gradually gained its place to observe the Condor City is the Apurimac Canyon in the Chonta sector of Cusco. From here you can see birds and nowadays not as many as its counterpart in Arequipa.
