But a new study aims to reclaim the elephant bird’s elusive title. After examining taxonomic exchanges and collected remains of elephant birds, researchers say a member of a previously unknown bird species can weigh more than 1,700 pounds, making it the largest known bird.
For centuries, scientists have competed to collect and display the largest ivory bird bones. But “no one has done any real, consistent research on these birds,” said James Hansford, a paleontologist at the Zoological Society of London and author of a study that left the feathered giants in taxonomic disarray. As a result, more than 15 elephant birds have been recognized in two species (a large number of species, the name of a group of closely related species).
To unravel the genealogy of the elephant, Dr. Hansford hopes to find out where one species ends and another begins. He traveled the world with a tape recorder and examined thousands of ivory bird bones. He then used data on birds and modern algorithms to determine how large birds could grow.
His findings, published Wednesday in the journal Royal Society Open Science, show three elephant birds instead of two, and four species instead of 15: Mulleornis modestus, Aepyornis hildebrandti, Aepyornis maximus and Vorombe titan.

One of these species, A. maximus, thought to be the heaviest elephant bird, until a British scientist announced in 1894 that he had discovered an even larger species, Aepornis titanus. Other researchers reject this conclusion, saying that A. Titan. An unusually large member of the A. maximus family.
But reports from Dr. Hansford, A. Titan is not only a species of its own, but a distinct species of the larger elephants, as shown by the size and shape of these three large bones. He named Vorombe titan species and species; vorombe is a Malagasy word meaning “big bird”.
“They thought the second largest elephant bird, Aepyornis maximus, was the largest and estimated it to be around 400-500 kilograms, which is correct,” Dr Hansford said. (One hundred kilograms equals 220 pounds, about one-fifth the weight of a grand piano.) But the newly discovered species is “much larger, weighing up to 800 kilograms, perhaps twice the body mass of A. maximus.”

Dr. Hansford said his study was the most rigorous study of elephant birds in over a century and combined outdated names with more accurate names.
“Many scientists in the 19th and early 20th centuries tried to claim a new species based on very little evidence, such as one bone being a few millimeters longer than the other,” he said. “It’s not just about size, it’s about what other shapes show.”
Although the fate of elephant birds was sealed long ago, Dr. Hansford said his work could help conservation efforts in Madagascar, where many unique plants and animals are under threat.
“These birds have co-evolved with the flora and fauna of Madagascar for millions of years,” he said. “To help conserve some of Madagascar’s endangered plants, we need to understand the ecological interactions we’ve lost.”
