The Arctic Ocean covers about 5.4 million square miles. The Southern Ocean, which surrounds Antarctica, is about 25 percent larger than the Arctic Ocean and is the second smallest ocean.
The largest ocean, the Pacific Ocean, connects with the Arctic Ocean through the Bering Strait. The second largest ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, is connected to the Arctic Ocean by the Greenland Sea. The Arctic is the third ocean on the planet, not connected to the Indian Ocean.
Antarctic Sea Ice Reaches Record Low
Tectonic history shows that the Arctic Basin was formed during the Cenozoic era. The bottom of the Arctic Basin is divided by three main submarine ridges. The Lomonosov ridge separates the sea floor of the Eurasian and American basins, while the Mediterranean and Alpha ridges separate the two main basins. These smaller ridges serve to separate the Arctic Ocean from the Atlantic Ocean.
Although the deepest point of the Arctic Ocean is just over 17,500 feet below sea level, the average depth of the ocean floor is 12,000 feet. The Arctic Ocean includes the North Sea, Hudson Bay, and the Barents Sea, as well as several straits and tributaries. While surface water flows freely from these geographic features, the ridges prevent deep water exchange. As a result, a stagnant pool of very cold water forms at the bottom of the arctic basin.
Surrounded almost entirely by the landmasses of Eurasia and North America, the most striking feature of the ocean is its ubiquitous ice, as average temperatures rarely rise above freezing. The area covered by ice varies with the season. The ice is covered with snow for 10 months every year. During rare periods of ice thinning, ships can navigate the Arctic Ocean via the Northwest Passage and the Northern Sea Route. Lower evaporation rates and limited connectivity with the rest of the world’s oceans combine with greater freshwater inflows from rivers and streams to reduce the salinity of the Arctic Ocean. As a result, the smallest ocean has the lowest salinity.
Although the ocean is almost completely covered by floating ice for most of the year, it is not barren. Tunnels through the ice, called brine channels, provide a rich variety of algae and bacteria that feed the flatworms and other creatures that live in the tunnels. Melting ice creates pools of water on the ice sheet, which also support various forms of life. When the ice melts, these organisms and nutrients are released into the ocean, which encourages algae growth. This aquatic organism is food for small creatures such as zooplankton, which is a food source for fish, seals, squid and lion’s mane jellyfish. Some of these large populations are prey for endangered species such as polar bears, walruses and whales that inhabit the area. As far north as the 88th parallel, other animals that live on the polar ice sheet for part of the year include rabbits, seagulls, and mink.

Once known as the frozen ocean, the Arctic remained largely unknown until the Amundsen-Ellsworth expedition in 1926. The ability to schedule flights across the Arctic Ocean to shorten the distance between major cities in Asia, Europe, and North America encouraged further exploration of the region. . Research in the 1950s revealed the complex nature of the ice sheet and seabed of the smallest ocean on the planet.
Aerial photography and satellite imagery, as well as other advanced scientific equipment, have provided detailed information on ice sheets, water depths, and life on the ocean floor for many years. Scientists are now working to better understand the world’s smallest ocean by changing weather patterns and their effects on polar ice sheets and water temperatures. We humans may spend most of our time on land, but we live in a world dominated by salt water, with oceans covering 71 percent of the Earth’s surface. Geographers divide the world’s oceans into named areas, the smallest of which is the Arctic Ocean.
Even the world’s smallest ocean is surprisingly vast. The area of the Arctic Ocean is about 8.7 million square kilometers and is 150 percent larger than North America. It is located in the polar region of the northern hemisphere and is almost completely surrounded by the continents of Europe, Asia and North America. Colder conditions keep the Arctic Ocean partially frozen year-round and completely covered in winter, although rising global temperatures have led to increased melting of this Arctic sea ice.
The Arctic Ocean is not only the smallest in area (10 times smaller than the Pacific Ocean), but it is also the shallowest. The average depth of the ocean is 2.3 miles (3.7 kilometers), or about 12,100 feet, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Meanwhile, the average depth of the Arctic Ocean is much shallower, about 0.65 miles (1.04 kilometers) or 3,407 feet. That’s like a splash in a kiddie pool compared to the deepest parts of the Pacific Ocean, which measure about 6.85 miles (11 kilometers) or 36,200 feet deep.

The relatively small size and depth of the Arctic Ocean has led some to challenge its classification as an ocean, calling it instead the Arctic Mediterranean of the Atlantic or simply part of the Arctic Ocean. Seas are small parts of oceans that are partially inland.
The question of whether a body of water is an ocean may seem unusual to some scientists, but the debate surrounding the world’s oceans extends beyond the Arctic. Historically, the world community recognized four oceans: Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Arctic Oceans. In 2000, the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) added a fifth: the Southern Ocean. This ocean, also known as the Antarctic Ocean, surrounds Antarctica and forms the southernmost body of water below 60 degrees south latitude.
The inclusion of the Southern Ocean, although generally accepted, has not yet been ratified, as not all IHO members have formally accepted the parameters defining the Southern Ocean as the fifth ocean. So how many oceans are there – four or five? By far, the most accurate answer might be one, because technically the entire world’s oceans are connected as one large expanse of salt water.
