Unlike population measurements, determining the world’s largest cities by area is not straightforward. Each country has its own definition of a city, making it more difficult to define a city by a standard measure of the largest city. For example, the city of Sermarsuk in Greenland has an area of over 400 square kilometers and a population of 23,123, according to the World Census.
To deal with inconsistencies between countries, population has developed a standardization for city measurement, called urban area, which takes population density into account when determining urban area. When using city area as a measure, it combines cities and counties, so the top 10 cities by county are not individual cities, but groups of nearby cities defined by population data.

The promoters wanted the capital of the newly created district to be located directly across the Missouri River, in part to impress developers of the then-planned Transcontinental Railroad so that tracks could pass through or through the new city. Despite Bellevue’s efforts, Omaha supporters won their city a regional capital, a trading post, delegation, and Native American institutions south of Omaha.
Located in St. Louis, steamboats carrying passengers and goods across the Missouri River connected Omaha to the east. In the 1860s, stage lines spread across the city. Freight trains to Denver and other places in the West helped make Omaha a transportation and logistics center. In 1863, the president. Abraham Lincoln designated Omaha-Council Bluffs as the eastern terminus of the first transcontinental railroad, which was completed in 1869 and made Omaha the eastern terminus of the railroad and promoted it to a growing urban center. Omaha was incorporated in 1857 with a pre-Civil War population of 1,883. By 1870, the frontier community numbered 16,083, a number that doubled a decade later.
