How To Find The Best Hair Color For Your Skin Tone

While there are several factors that make a color the best for you, the best place to start is your undertone (and shade). Knowing just this part means you can eliminate almost half the color, making shopping twice as easy.

In part 1 of this 2-part series on color analysis (sometimes called “Seasonal Color Analysis”), I’ll explain ‘highlights vs. undertones’, show you 5 ways to determine your base tone, and what to do if I’m right – truly ‘neutral”.

In Part 2, I’ll give you an overview of 3 other important aspects of your personal color analysis: depth, chrominance, and contrast level, and show you how to determine yours.

Best Unnatural Hair Colors For Every Skin Tone

As the name suggests, your skin tone is the color under the skin (not to be confused with skin tone). All have hues from the cool (bluer) to warm (more yellow) spectrum. I say it’s a spectrum because some people are definitely very warm and some are very icy, but most are in the middle and some are really… really neutral, the perfect balance between warm and cool.

Once you know your skin tone, you can remove any color that is in the opposite shade. In this graphic you can see the position of all the colors of the spectrum on the color wheel. So if it’s warm to you, you can remove all the colors on the cool side, and if it’s cool, remove the warm colors.

It seems easy enough, but people often struggle with context. I understand that. sometimes it seems obvious, but sometimes it can be really difficult, especially for those with very fair, olive, yellow, or black skin. Many of these difficulties can be explained by a confusion of nuances. Before we continue, let’s outline the important differences between the diagram below and the shade below.

A visual explanation of Overton Vs. undertone and how the two work together to create different skin tones.

Determine Your Undertone & Overtone (once And For All!)

Above you can see a warm (yellow) to neutral (red) to cool (blue) gradient. You might think neutral should be green because it’s between yellow and blue, but so is red. Back to the color wheel. You’ll notice that red is also between blue and yellow; you just have to turn the color wheel in the opposite direction (see the color wheel above to see what I mean). The reason we use red here instead of green is because nothing has a green tint. (If you now think olive skin has a green undertone, just wait. I’ll explain olive skin in a moment.)

Overlay on a tonal gradient. You may find that someone with pink and warm undertones gives off a more peachy undertone, like Blake Lively, while someone with pink and cool undertones gives off a more porcelain undertone, like Emma Stone or Lucy Liu. With a neutral tone, you get a purer pink like Madelaine Petsch.

Likewise, if you use a yellower skin tone and apply it with a warm base, you’ll get a very Gwyneth Paltrow-like skin tone, while if you apply a yellow color over a cool base, you’ll get what we call an “Olive” tone of the skin, like Sarah Jessica Parker (because yellow + blue = green, like olive).

Get a deeper tan. with warm skin tones you get caramel or honey tones like Mindy Kaling or Naomi Campbell and with cool skin tones you get more auburn like Lupito Nyong’o or auburn like Zoë Saldana.

Choosing Hair Colour Based On Indian Skin Tone

In addition to olive skin being perceived as a green or warm undertone, there are several other common misconceptions about undertones. One is that Asians have warm undertones because their skin is often described as “yellow.” However, you can see that Asians can sit anywhere on the spectrum, from Mindy Kaling to Olivia Munn to Lucy Liu. Also, black or very light skin is always cool. This chart shows that people with any high tone (white, yellow, pink, brown, black) can have cool or warm undertones.

This is one of the easiest self-tests, although it is not always easy to interpret. You can simply look at the veins on your wrist or under your eyes to see if they look more purple/blue (cool) or green (warm).

This can be difficult for those of us who haven’t seen our natural hair color in a long time (for me it was

If you are, just look at your roots and eyebrows or try to find a photo of you with natural hair around 20 years old (our hair changes a lot during childhood and adolescence, it usually darkens with age, on the other hand, hair can start to turn gray ., as we age, so looking back we like to find good examples of our hair in “peak” color).

To determine if your hair is cooler or warmer, ask yourself, “My hair has a golden undertone. Or I would describe it as “ash”. If the color is warm, you probably have a warm undertone, but if it’s more gray, then you’re probably cool. (Black and platinum blonde are usually cool).

Note: Red hair is complicated. You might think that orange is a warm color while redheads will have warm undertones, but that’s not always the case. If your hair is bright orange or strawberry blonde, you’re probably cool. If she’s blonde, you must be good. Redheads shouldn’t rely on hair color tests alone.

Keep gold and silver jewelry on your face. What makes you look brighter and healthier and what makes your skin more yellow, red, blotchy or gray? If gold jewelry lifts you, you are warm. If silver is better, you are good.

Contrast warm and cool neutrals with your makeup-free skin. Try white against cream, gray against camel and black against tan. If you look best in white, gray and black, you’re awesome. If you look best in cream, camel and chocolate, then you are a warm person.

Eye color itself has little to do with whether you are cool or warm. Blue eyes don’t automatically mean cool, just like brown eyes don’t automatically mean warm. What you want to look for is eye color and feature quality. If you have brown or golden freckles or starbursts, it indicates that you have a warm undertone. If your eyes look smoky, icy, or like broken glass, this indicates a cold color. If the eye tone can be described as “gold”, “turquoise” or “honey”, it often means warm. If the tone can be described as “cool”, “brown” or “grey”, it usually means cold.

Like I said, everything is a spectrum. We are individuals and our color is made up of many different factors, some warm, some cold. Some people are really right in the middle. If you struggle with the above test or can’t decide between cold or warm, or if you decide warm on one side and cold on the other, you are probably truly neutral or on the near-neutral spectrum. If you are, stick to colors that aren’t too warm or cool, but are in the middle. You’re probably not completely dead, but leaning a little to one side or the other, meaning you can wear colors that are in that half of the spectrum, but you’ll look best if you stay closer to neutrals. For example, if you’ve decided to go with a warm but close to neutral color, you can wear anything from warm to neutral, but you’ll look best in warm colors that aren’t too warm and have a neutral undertone.

Now that you know your skin tone, you can make a better decision about which color to choose
