How To Position Area Rug In Living Room – Sometimes it can seem overwhelming to find the right size rug for your space. However, we have some handy tips to get you closer to decorating with complete happiness.
Time and time again, we hear from our customers that choosing the right size rug for their living room can be tricky. And the worst? There is no one-size-fits-all solution we can offer!
How To Position Area Rug In Living Room
Because different homes have different challenges, the perfect size rug for one home will differ from one home to another. So the best place to start is where you are.
How To Place An Area Rug In A Living Room
Arrange your furniture in a way that feels comfortable and natural in the room. Next, think about the placement of any legs along with the furniture.
To find the right size rug for a floorless room, measure the coffee table or the center of the room. In smaller rooms, 5×7 rugs can do the trick. However, larger rooms may require less. The idea is to place your furniture around the rug, not so far away that it doesn’t clutter the living space.
If you want the look of the front legs of a furniture set, measure from the center of your furniture on one side of the room to the center of your furniture on the other side. Rinse and repeat on the other side. Depending on the size of your home, you may need a 7×9, 8×10, or 9×13 rug.
If you need all furniture legs, measure to the outer edges of your furniture. Don’t forget that your side tables should also rest properly on the rug in this setup. Also, make sure that there is no relief space left between the wall and the rug. Your goal isn’t to create the look of wall-to-wall carpeting — you’re creating space for conversation.
How To Choose The Best Bedroom Rug Placement
Sometimes it can be difficult to determine the look of a rug in an empty room. If you’re having trouble, take an old piece of flat paper and cut it to fit your rug. Use it as a reference in your design to help you identify different dimensions that fill the space and change the feel of the room.
If you’re struggling with furniture repair, we’ve got your back! Our rug sizing and placement guide serves as a starting point for furniture placement around your new rug.
This set of photos shows the furniture with front legs – but these assemblies work just as well without legs or with two legs on them. Easily increase or decrease the size of the rug at your location.
We can’t stress enough that finding the right rug for your home should be fun and exciting. De-stress and let go of the idea that there is a “right” or “wrong” rule. Nature is constantly developing and evolving. This makes decorating fun! Most importantly, you’ll love how your new rug completes the room when you’re done. Every time we post a picture of an area of our house, we always get the question, “What size rug is there?” I understand! Sometimes you just need a link to get started. But the dimensions of a room in our house are very unlikely to be the exact dimensions of a room in your house. And when it comes to rugs, room size matters a lot! So after launching our Loloi rug yesterday, we thought it would be a good time to discuss which rug size you need.
We always had a king bed, and I thought if you had a king bed you had to have a 9×12 rug, so that’s what I had. I thought it was just a RULE. Our 9×12 rug covered almost every inch of the floor and was like wall-to-wall carpeting. We kept it for a few years and then bought an 8×10 that fit our living room perfectly and made our space feel even BIGGER because the floors were exposed around the edges.
General: Larger rooms need larger rugs to soften the floor, while smaller rooms may need smaller rugs to make them appear larger. And if you want to know what size carpet we recommend – read on! We list these guidelines for the bedroom, living room and kitchen (with fabrics from our collection) below!
Living Room Rug Placement: The Ultimate Guide
As you can see, most sizes depend on the size of your bed, so check out the guidelines above. Be sure to leave room around the edges of your room (even 7 inches like the one below looks pretty neat!)
The living room is the least visited place. A rug floating in the middle of a room can make your entire space feel disjointed and disconnected. Use a rug on the floor and secure your chair. Our house used to have a 10×14 and now we have a 9×12 and it works! We followed the original guide and made sure the front was on the carpet and the sofa had plenty of room on both sides. 9×12 worked for our style!
Does not matter! Our last living room was narrower than it was high, and it was called a 10×14 because we wanted to be 10′ wide and 8×10′, which made the long room completely creak. So we bought a 10×14 and put all the furniture on the carpet and it felt very stable. Again, it’s about looking at the size of your room and the placement of your furniture. But here are some tips to keep in mind:
Finally, let’s talk about kitchens. We don’t currently have a rug in one of our toddler-friendly kitchens, but we put a rug in the breakfast room for Rosemary (see below) and it’s amazing what she’s done there. Especially now that I understand how easy these fabrics are to clean and how well they work.
