What Is The Best Essential Oil To Kill Fleas – I love science, it’s always been my favorite subject at school. I even majored in biology in college. Fortunately, my daughter seems to be picking up on my love of science. He loves learning about insects, dinosaurs, outer space, geology and this year he asked to learn about bacteria. So we’ve spent the last few months growing bacteria on agar in petri dishes and testing all kinds of products. One of our tests tested the effectiveness of various natural household cleaners. Since our essential oil spray scored so poorly in our previous tests, we were curious to see if essential oils would perform better at full strength and which ones kill bacteria the best, so we created a test to find out.
Our test: Which essential oils are the most antibacterial? First we decided which essential oils to test. We went with tea tree, cypress, juniper, cloves, lemongrass and sweet oranges, and I asked my daughter to write a hypothesis. He thought the essential oils would kill the bacteria at full strength and that the sweet orange would work really well (mainly because it’s his favorite oil I guess lol).

The Petri dishes we use come pre-filled with agar so there is no maintenance, they are ready to use. You can order them yourself here. We labeled one dish as a control with a permanent marker, and labeled our other dishes with the name of each oil we tested (we ran out of petri dishes, so we split them in half with a permanent marker to test the highest amount of oil .probably not the most scientific step I’ve ever done, but it worked well).

Then my daughter’s favorite part, spreading her dirty fingers over the agar in all our petri dishes to introduce bacteria. Then we put the lid back on our control bowl and set it aside (no oil will go into this bowl). We then put two drops of each oil into the labeled container and put on the petri dish lids.
We then placed them in our home incubator (just a large pot with a lid and hot water bottles to keep them warm inside) and let them incubate for 3 days, changing the hot water bottles several times a day. After three days the results were:
The cloves and eucalyptus seemed to kill any bacteria it came in contact with. Lemongrass also appears to be an excellent disinfectant. Sweet orange doesn’t seem to kill anything, so maybe it’s not the best cleanser. I am impressed with the results of tea tree oil. I’ve always heard that the tea is supposed to be effective at killing bacteria, but in our test it didn’t seem to kill many bacteria. I’m not sure if we messed something up or if the tea tree essential oil isn’t as much of a germ killer as I thought. I would love to recreate the tea tree sometime if we get the chance.
Finally, I had my daughter draw pictures of our results and record the number of bacterial colonies that grew in each section and write a conclusion. He was upset that his sweet orange oil hadn’t proven to be an effective disinfectant, but hey, it was still good for a lot of other things.
