Beginning in March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced airlines around the world to reduce and revise flight schedules as travel ceased and countries closed their borders. Pilots were retired early, employees were laid off, and planes were grounded.
However, strong post-pandemic demand is turning the industry upside down. With travel growing faster than expected, airlines are taking steps to keep up, including buying new planes, opening new routes and launching aggressive hiring campaigns to increase ground engagement and in flight to keep operations running smoothly.
Global airlines will carry about 2.2 billion passengers on 22.2 million flights in 2021, research firm Finances Online said, citing data from the International Air Transport Agency (IATA). According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the figure was 1.8 billion in 2020, just 40% of the 4.5 billion traffic carried in 2019.
