How To Measure For An Area Rug In A Living Room
Rugs are one of our favorite ways to add warmth and interest to a room and define a space. They help transform and finish your space, but shopping for them and knowing the right size for your space isn’t easy. Today, we’re sharing a guide to help you choose the right size rug for your space, and we’re sharing some of our favorite rugs!
How To Choose An Entryway Rug Size
The first thing to consider when buying a rug is the size, shape and layout of the room. You want to make sure that the rug is large enough to accommodate the space, as a rug that is too small can make the space feel cramped and awkward, and may end up looking like an oversized area rug. Taking measurements is very important.
Depending on how you plan to arrange your furniture, there are different types of rugs you can choose from. There are three main types of rugs: just the front feet on the rug, all the furniture on the rug, or all the furniture on the rug except the coffee table (use the visual we’ve created below to get started). If you prefer rugs over all your furniture except the coffee table, make sure the rug is as wide as your sofa.
Once you have decided on the layout and size, you can use painter’s tape to mock up the placement of the rug to better reflect the rug in your room.
You will use the same process when choosing a rug for your bedroom. Look at the layout of the room, consider where the door is in the space, and pay attention to other furniture in the room (ottomans, the back of the bed, etc.). If you have a bench or ottoman behind the bed, make sure your rug is big enough to sit on and has at least 12 inches of space.
How To Pick The Best Rug Size And Placement
Make sure to take measurements! We recommend choosing a rug that is at least 12 to 24 inches on each side of the bed.
You can also use painter’s tape or mattress pads to outline the size of your bedroom rug.
Once you’ve determined the best rug size for your space, it’s time to choose your own rug! The living room is often a popular area of the home, so it’s important to choose a rug that can withstand high traffic. We’ve selected our favorite durable rugs to share with you below.

Whenever we post a picture of a space in our house, we always ask, “what size rug is here?” We get questions like: I got it! Sometimes all you need is a frame of reference to get started. But it is very likely that the size of the room in our house is the exact size of the room in your house. When it comes to rugs, room size matters! So, with the launch of our rug line yesterday, we thought it would be a perfect time to talk to Loloi about the rug size you need.
How To Choose The Right Rug Size For Your Bedroom
We always have a king size bed, I figured if we have a king size bed, we should have at least a 9×12 rug, I don’t have one. I thought it was just RIGHT. At 9×12, our rug looks like a wall-to-wall rug that covers every inch of the floor. We put it away for a few years and then bought an 8 × 10 that fits the size of our room better and makes our space even bigger because it has some flooring around the corner.
In general: Larger rooms need larger rugs to complement them, while smaller rooms sometimes need smaller rugs to make them appear larger. If you want to know the recommended carpet size, read on! Below, we share a bedroom, living room, and dining room tutorial (featuring rugs from our collection)!
As you can see, most sizes will fit your mattress size, so please refer to the guide above. It is very important to leave some space in the corner of the room (even 7 inches like the one below looks great!) and on the side of the bed.
Accommodation is usually sparsely populated. The carpet floating in the middle of the room felt like it had been cut and torn all over. Use a rug on the floor and place a chair. We used to have a 10×14 in our bedroom and now have a 9×12 and it works! We follow the first instructions and make sure that the front of all the chairs are square on the carpet and on both sides of the sofa. 9×12 works for us!
Guide To Choosing A Rug Size
Not yet! The end living room is narrower than it is long and needs a 10×14 because we need 10′ wide and 8×10′ across the long living room. So take a 10×14 and put all the furniture on top of the carpet so it looks like dirt. Again, this all depends on the size of the room and the placement of your furniture. But here are some tips to keep in mind:
Finally, let’s talk about restaurants. We do not have a carpet in any dining room at the moment because it is small, but we decorated one from Rosemarie (pictured below) for breakfast and what they did for the place is amazing. Mainly because of how easy and comfortable this carpet is to clean.
We appreciate your support and are here to help! We’ll share each story, so you can see it up close and we’ll be happy to answer any additional questions!
