How To Pick Rug Size For Bedroom – I am often asked how to choose the right rug for under the dining table, under the bed, entryway and really just about anywhere! And while we’re on the subject, there’s only one design rule I believe in – you need to choose the right size rug for your space! I have an earlier blog post about choosing the right size rug (here) – hey, even Joanna Gaines changed her way from choosing a rug that’s too small to choosing the right rug for the balance of the room and furniture . Let me show you some of my tips from previous edits.
We tried two different rugs in my sister’s bedroom renovation! The photo above is an 8×10 charcoal rug that I originally ordered but wasn’t there when I needed to take the photo. So I shot it with a light 6×9 mat, too small for the space, it’s fun to see the dark highlights.

Essential Tips For Choosing The Correct Size Area Rug For Each Room In Your Home
We made this 8×10 rug for this queen bed. I wanted it to be big because it was a room and it would break up all the gold floors and gold wallpaper.
I made an 8×10 for my sisters bedroom to brighten up the room and contrast the dark carpet. You can find the rug here.

We went from a 9×12 rug to a 6×9 with this updated bedroom! This is a double bed and it matches the carpet and the room very well! The rug is about 2 feet from the bed (you can find the bedroom layout and rug here).

How To Choose The Right Rug Size For Your Living Room
This is a small room – but a great example of how we turned the rug to match the shape of the room. I usually run rugs horizontally to break up the shape of the bed, but this one runs the length of the bed. It’s also good to show how a rug can add space to even a rug. For this bedroom makeover we made a king size bed with an 8×10 rug, of course I showed what a light rug looks like versus a dark one! Find two options for this change.
Again for those of you who think you need to move the carpet to the carpet – yes! A rug over a rug is always a great way to define a space and add color if you want! (You can find this updated bedroom here and the rug here ).
You can see I put two rugs on our front porch, this door mat was too small by itself to “let you know there are more plants”. I had to overlap the carpet so that it covered at least the entire width of the door. I recently ordered this 3×5 rug for our back door, can’t wait to show it to you!

I feel strongly that the front legs of your sofa should rest on the carpet and the front legs of any chairs you may have in the room. It really brings it all together. If you are too old, everything seems floating and ungrounded. I have this rug in my living room and I love the color, it’s a very thin rug for high traffic areas and has an edge that people step on when they enter our home (the rug wears out quickly). I recommend this type of rug for a bedroom or a bedroom where there is not a lot of traffic.
We switched to this rug (I gave it to a friend to copy the other one above). This rug is a bit large, I prefer a 6×9 in our living room, but sometimes you just have to match the size of the rug, so here we have a 7’6″x9’6″. This new rug is screen printed – I thought it was a crochet rug online, totally wrong. But it is reasonable for the price. I also don’t worry about it being in a high traffic area if it’s printed.
Before choosing anything else, I prefer to start by choosing a rug first! A rug makes such a statement and can sometimes be the hardest thing to find. In this family room makeover, I chose a colorful rug because the rest of the furniture is neutral. (You can find the rug here).

We also went with a patterned and darker rug because it’s a higher traffic area than a plain jute rug.

This home has an open floor plan, so it’s important that everything works well and coordinates. So I try to think about how well they should flow in each family. We were redoing the entryway and wanted the rug to match the painted front door and entryway. This rug can do just that! (You can find the rug here).

I don’t have many pictures of the dining room or the kitchen table on the carpet. But if you want to do this, it’s a good guideline that when you pull the chair, it will sit on the carpet. I think whether to put a rug under the table is a completely personal choice. I suggest going with a rug that cleans up all the dirt easily!
I usually follow the same rules for the home office as I do for the dining room. You want your chair to stay on the mat when the chair is pulled away from the table. Here you can find the rug in my sister’s office.
