Atopic dermatitis usually occurs as a result of a combination of immune system activation, genetics, environmental triggers and stress. It also occurs as a result of skin irritation in the form of detergents, soaps, perfumes, types of clothing, lack of humidity, temperature, pollen, dust mites, mold and even food allergies.
Although doctors can prescribe over-the-counter creams and lotions to relieve symptoms, if you are one of the few people who are allergic to even mild chemicals or cosmetic treatments and want to find a more natural alternative, don’t be looking further ahead. Here comes an essential oil as your knight in shining armor that not only helps reduce inflammation and irritation, but also aims to heal the affected skin.
For the uninitiated, essential oils are highly concentrated tinctures obtained through the cold-press distillation method from the roots, stems, leaves, flowers or fruit of a plant. Since ancient times, these oils in the form of plant extracts have been used for various purposes due to their unparalleled therapeutic applications.
Today, they are mostly used in aromatherapy sessions and manage various skin types and health conditions by diluting them with carrier oils. In addition, with a positive effect on antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, they are also appreciated for their wonderful role in reducing itching, irritation, dryness and inflammation caused by with eczema. Of course, not all essential oils are good for eczema, some can even worsen the condition if used raw. But there are also some that treat eczema flare-ups from the inside out when used properly after moisturizing with carrier oils.

As the dry winter weather sets in, so do itchy, flaky, scaly skin for my girls. Since they were born, we have always struggled with these skin problems for about six months a year. I have been officially diagnosed with a severe form of eczema and it has never been bad enough to require medical ointments, although I am reluctant to use them because of the steroid content. We’ve worn and tried just about every lotion and cream out there that runs the gamut from natural to full on medical grade and full of chemicals (insert horrible face here) . I even made my own cream at first after reading a few recipes online, but nothing ever worked (and I felt guilty because I tried something homemade on my girls and it didn’t work, as if I had them from today’s resources taken off or something).

Well, I decided to try my hand again at creating my own lot after the ones we used stopped working as the weather got colder and drier here in the Midwest. The girls skin at this point was about the worst it had ever been. They were constantly choking and their arms and legs felt like paper. I felt terrible and knew I had to try something. So I went down the internet rabbit hole and looked for natural remedies for dry skin. After a few days of reading on the subject, I created a scent that showed some promise. However, I wasn’t a fan of the oily consistency of the salve, so I adjusted the repine to create more cream. The results?? I am happy to report that with regular use for about three days her skin was almost completely back to normal, it was so good in fact that we even went two days without putting any lotion on (not that on purpose but it was Christmas and stuff they were crazy) and his skin wasn’t a problem until the end of the two days.
So I’m happy to report this second attempt at pot
