One of the big things you see here is that the definition of “older” in terms of income makes a significant difference. this
Why America Is So Scared Of China’s Biggest Tech Company
The Washington state company is Microsoft because bulk software sales are very profitable. And Amazon has three times the market value of Costco because investors (apparently) believe that one day Amazon will abandon its zero-profit business strategy and emerge as a monopoly titan. But Costco’s actual sales exceed the sales of any of these high-tech companies.
You’re seeing the same thing again in California, represented by a major oil company, not Apple or Google. Chevron is less profitable than these Silicon Valley giants because the costs involved in its industry are enormous. But Chevron sells things worth more dollars.
Most news outlets make money through advertising or subscriptions. But when it comes to what we’re trying to do, there are some big problems with relying on ads and subscriptions to keep the lights on.
First, advertising dollars rise and fall with the economy. We often only know what our ad revenue will be for a few months, which makes planning difficult.

Second, we are not in the subscription business. Here to help everyone understand the complex issues that shape the world, not just those who can afford a subscription. We believe it is an important part of building a more equal society. And we can’t do that if we have a paywall.
Just as it’s important to have a diversified retirement portfolio to weather the ups and downs of the stock market, it’s important to have multiple ways to make money. That’s why, while advertising remains our main source of income, we also seek grants and reader support. (And regardless of how our work is funded, we have strict guidelines for editorial independence.)

Throughout the 20th century and before globalization reached its current peak, American companies made the country an economic powerhouse and the source of much of the world’s market value.
But while countries like China continued with their own multibillion-dollar companies and major market sectors shifted, the US managed to stay up.
How do the top 100 companies in the world rank? This illustration comes from PwC’s annual ranking of the world’s largest companies using May 2021 market capitalization data.

The world’s 100 largest companies account for $31.7 trillion in market capitalization, but that wealth is not evenly distributed.
Among companies, there is a wide range of market capitalization. For example, the difference between the largest company in the world (Apple) and the 100th company (Anheuser-Busch) is $1.9 trillion.
And between countries, this gap is even more pronounced. Of the 16 countries with the top 100 companies ranked, the US USA it represents 65% of the total market value.
Compared to the United States, other previously prominent markets such as Japan, France and the United Kingdom have seen their share of the world’s top 100 companies decline over the years. One of the main reasons for the dominance of the US USA of market values is change to major industries and taxpayers. Of the top 100 companies in the world, 52% were based in technology or consumer discretionary, and today’s largest companies such as Apple, Alphabet, Tesla and Walmart are all American.
With 14 of its own companies among the world’s top 100, China accounts for $4.19 trillion, or 13% of the total market value of the top 100. It includes two of the top 10 companies by market capitalization, Tencent and Alibaba.
Surprisingly, China’s rise in market value has not been limited to well-known consumer and technology companies. The country’s second largest contributing industry to the top 100 companies was finance, which was also the most valuable sector in the US. USA (now fourth behind technology, consumer discretionary and health).
Other prominent countries on the list include Saudi Arabia and its state oil and gas company Saudi Aramco, the third largest in the world. Despite having only one company in the top 100, Saudi Arabia has a third of the total market capitalization of the top 100.
