Each year, Fortune publishes its list of the 1,000 largest companies by revenue in the United States. Business Insider reviewed the 2017 list of the top companies headquartered in each US state. You can see our full list here.
Household names like Apple, Amazon and General Electric made the list, along with some potentially more obscure companies like South Carolina paper maker Domtar and North Dakota oil and gas driller MDU Resource Group.
Seven states had no companies in the top 1,000 and were omitted from the list: Alaska, Maine, Montana, New Mexico, South Dakota, West Virginia and Wyoming.

Throughout the 20th century and before globalization reached its current peak, American companies made the country an economic powerhouse and the source of much of the world’s market value.
But while countries like China continued with their own multibillion-dollar companies and major market sectors shifted, the US managed to stay up.
How do the top 100 companies in the world rank? This illustration comes from PwC’s annual ranking of the world’s largest companies using May 2021 market capitalization data.

The world’s 100 largest companies account for $31.7 trillion in market capitalization, but that wealth is not evenly distributed.
Among companies, there is a wide range of market capitalization. For example, the difference between the largest company in the world (Apple) and the 100th company (Anheuser-Busch) is $1.9 trillion.
And between countries, this gap is even more pronounced. Of the 16 countries with the top 100 companies ranked, the US USA it represents 65% of the total market value.
Compared to the United States, other previously prominent markets such as Japan, France and the United Kingdom have seen their share of the world’s top 100 companies decline over the years. In fact, Europe as a whole only accounts for $3.46 trillion, or 11% of the list’s total market capitalization.

One of the main reasons for the dominance of the US USA of market values ​​is change to major industries and taxpayers. Mapping the United States: The Most Dangerous Cities in the US USA This map shows the most dangerous cities in the US in terms of violent crime rate per 1,000 residents.
The focus is often on big cities like Chicago or San Francisco, but some of the most dangerous cities in the U.S. are actually small or suburban towns, at least according to new per capita data from Neighborhood Scout.

The map above shows the most dangerous urban areas in the US in terms of the number of violent crimes per 1,000 residents. It uses the most recent FBI crime data available in 2023 and the Census Bureau’s population.
Note: The source only considers cities with a population of 25,000 or more. The report is based on reported violent crimes, including armed robbery, murder, rape and aggravated assault.
While the most dangerous cities in the United States are spread across several states, Alabama is home to three of the 10 cities with the highest violent crime rates: Bessemer (#1), Mobile (#2) and Birmingham ( No. 7).
Both large and small cities make the list, with Memphis and Detroit being the largest cities to appear in the top 10 with populations over 600,000. Each has a 1 in 39 to 1 in 1 chance of being a victim of a violent crime. -43 inches, respectively.

It’s hard to touch on violent crime in America without discussing gun violence. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there are more than 22,000 deaths from gender-based violence in the United States in July 2023. This includes 371 mass shootings and the deaths of 150 children.

And while the FBI’s latest annual numbers show that violent crime decreased from 2020 to 2021, homicides increased over the same period.
