The Big Apple isn’t called the Big Apple for nothing. With a bustling population of more than eight million, New York is the largest city in the United States. In fact, it has held this title for over 200 years.
Even if you’ve never been to New York, you’re probably familiar with the city’s busy streets and crowded subways from watching it in many movies, commercials, and TV shows.
Los Angeles – a city on the opposite side of the country from New York – is next to NYC in terms of population. Although its median rent is nearly $100 higher, LA has only half the population of NYC.

Three Texas cities made our top ten list this year, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see Texas make a strong showing soon.
San Jose may be the 10th most populous, but its housing costs are higher than any other city in our top 10. In fact, of the 100 largest cities in the US, only Irvine, California has higher housing costs than San Jose.
We base our classification entirely on population and use Census Bureau sources to gather all of the population data.
