Royal Caribbean has just announced plans for its newest cruise ship which, when built, will be the largest in the world.
What Is The Biggest Cruise Ship Ever
It will surpass “Wonder of the Seas”, another Royal Caribbean cruise ship that currently holds the title of the largest ship in the world.
A Timeline Of The World’s Largest Passenger Ships From 1831 Present
Icon of the Seas will feature 18 passenger decks, seven swimming pools and more than 40 restaurants and bars. It will be able to accommodate 5,610 guests on board and have a gross tonnage of 250,800 tons.
The luxury ship will also have eight “neighborhoods” on board, each with its own special experiences, entertainment and restaurants. With a focus on breaking records, these districts boast a number of firsts: Thrill Island will feature the largest cruise ship water park, the first outdoor free-fall slide and the tallest slide in the industry.
The ship will also feature Chill Island, with an ocean-view pool and frozen cocktail bar, and The Hideaway, which will be home to the first infinity pool suspended in the sea, surrounded by a multi-level sundeck complete with Jacuzzi and beach. road block.
The cruise is family-focused, with the Family Infinity Balcony and Surfside Family Suite on offer, as well as the Ultimate Family Townhouse, complete with mailboxes and signature white picket fences.
Ship Photos Of The Day
Icon of the Seas will sail year-round on seven-night cruises from Miami, with each itinerary calling at Cococay in the Bahamas. Powered by liquefied natural gas (a clean burning fuel), it will be the company’s first vessel with fuel cell technology, making it the company’s most sustainable vessel to date.
Michael Bailey, president and chief executive officer of Royal Caribbean International, said: “Icon of the Seas is the culmination of more than 50 years of unforgettable experiences and our next bold commitment to tourists. Now more than ever, families and friends are prioritizing experiences where they can bond and enjoy their own adventures.”

Biggest Cruise Ship Ever Passes First Round Of Sea Trials

For the first time, Royal Caribbean is using Port Canaveral as a base for its newest ship, Wonder of the Seas. This puts the world’s largest cruise ship just a few hours’ drive from the Tampa Bay area.
With 18 passenger decks, she is nearly 1,200 feet long and can accommodate around 7,000 passengers with around 2,200 crew members, the most of any cruise ship. It is five times larger than the Titanic.
With 18 floors high, you’ll be able to navigate this seaside town before dinner, which can be difficult for anyone afraid of heights. There is a tube slide called the Ultimate Abyss which is the tallest slide in the ocean and starts from a dizzying glass platform. It then rotates and rejects the next 10 stories. There is also a floating bar called Rising Tide that floats up and down between Deck 5 and Deck 8 where patrons sip their drinks while slowly passing other passengers.

Central Park is one of eight different neighborhoods on Wonder of the Seas and features more than 20,000 real plants. Travelers can enjoy nature while strolling the neighborhood’s hiking trails, browsing the shops, or dining alfresco at one of four restaurants. [Michael Verdor | Royal Caribbean]
While on this ship, you feel like you are sailing in an amusement park. With three Vegas-style shows to choose from, it also has a sports grandstand complete with basketball and basketball courts, and an ice rink available to cruisers when they’re not downtown for extended shows. There’s also a line-up of comedians, several live music options, water slides, surf simulators, mini golf, rock climbing and a zip line. And of course, there are many pools, sunbeds, bars and food. Lots of food.
This cruise is family-friendly, with large playgrounds, splash pads and a sundeck just for teenagers, and it costs less than a Disney cruise. A seven-day oceanfront balcony cruise for two on Wonder of the Seas costs $4,800. The same time frame as Disney is $6,700. Both charge extra for internet service and private restaurants. The Disney rate includes a free soda, but Disney does not offer alcohol packages or have casinos on its ships.
Longtime travel consultant Jane Feiling, who owns About the Memories Travel in Tampa, has been on Royal Caribbean’s other massive “Oasis Class” ships that have restaurants and similar “quarters” that share the mega-ships. She asked Wonder for new items and liked the new Southern-style restaurant and bar. There’s an extra charge there ($24.99-$39.99) and you’ll get crab beignets, Nashville spicy chicken and red velvet pancakes. The bar serves specialty cocktails with imaginative patterns like Far From Manhattan bourbon with a slice of candied bacon.

She also likes that the Windjammer, a spacious buffet restaurant found on other Oasis-class ships, has been redesigned to make it easier to understand what’s on offer and avoid cluttered obstacles with mirror service on either side of the room.
Far from being unbelievable, Felling said this type of activity is what modern cruisers are looking for, even among retirees.
“I think it’s commuting now because of the coronavirus,” Felling said. People rarely sit and relax. They want to go and do things. They want multiple activities where they have the option of choosing or going to a port of call. Now they are very adventurous.”

Even the most intrepid traveler can feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of options. Reviews of Wonder’s past cruises show that popular restaurants and specialties quickly get prime time from those who use the ship’s app during boarding. Crowds can also create congestion around the pool or when the show is over.
The boardwalk on Deck 6 resembles Coney Island, with a full-size carousel, Johnny Rockets with shakes and burgers, a sports bar and a candy store. At the back of the promenade is the Aqua Theater, where you can watch film screenings and plays during the day, and spectacular water acrobatics and diving at night.

But the boat, like a cave, has its quiet corners. The Solarium, an indoor/outdoor escape for travelers over 16 only, has jacuzzis and lounging areas and can be very quiet at night. Central Park’s outdoor space on the 8th floor has real trees and greenery as you walk through a series of shops and markets in what feels like a quiet neighborhood.
Wonder also stops at the Bahamas Company’s Cacao Island. It has three beaches, the largest swimming pool in the Bahamas and free outdoor restaurants. For an additional fee ($84 and up), you can visit the island’s water park, which features a wave pool, dozens of slides, a splash pad, a zip line and the tallest water slide in North America.

And it all starts, for the first time, with a berth at Port Canaveral, now the second-busiest cruise port in the world after Miami, based on passenger numbers. Michael Bailey, chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, was present at the official naming ceremony for the new ship last month. He noted the importance of placing this new property close to Central Florida tourists.
What It’s Like To Sail On The Royal Caribbean Symphony Of The Seas, The World’s Biggest Cruise Ship
“It makes it a great regional market to visit and we see it as a great stop near major population centers,” Bailey said. “Oasis-class ships can accommodate more guests than ever before.”
