Facts About The Sahara Desert
We often think of deserts as large expanses of sand barren of life. However, as we will soon see, some deserts have no sand while others have many types of plants and animals.
Since there are so many types of deserts, and since deserts cover a third of the Earth’s surface, it makes sense to wonder which one is the largest. Think carefully and join us as we explore the world’s 5 largest deserts on Earth.
Note: Some sites list Australia’s various deserts as the fourth largest desert in the world. We don’t want to include it in this list because it’s technically a desert.
The Gobi Desert is the second largest desert in Asia and the fifth largest desert in the world. Located on the border of China and Mongolia, it is historically home to many important cities along the ancient Silk Road.
Cold Deserts: What They Are And Where Can You Find Them
This desert is called a desert desert, which means that the nearby mountains prevent rain from reaching this area. In this case, the Tibetan Plateau in the southwest prevents rain from reaching the Gobi Desert. Another famous rain shadow desert is the Atacama Desert in northern Chile.
Far from being completely inhospitable, the Gobi Desert is home to a variety of species such as the Bactrian (Mongolian) camel, black-tailed gazelle, Gobi ibex, Gobi bear and snow leopard. Although plants are generally rare, there are some species of plants that are very adept at surviving the extremes of the desert. The most common plant is the saxal tree, which can store moisture in its bark and is found in various parts of the Gobi desert.
The Arabian Desert is the largest desert in Asia and the fourth largest desert in the world. It covers most of the Arabian Peninsula and is found in nine countries, the second most of any desert on this list.
The Arabian desert is known as subtropical, which means that the temperature is always hot and the rainfall is low. At its southern tip is the world’s largest sand dune, known as Rab al-Khali (or the Empty Quarter in English).
Opportunities And Challenges In The Sahara Desert
Although the Arabian desert is a critical habitat for many mammals, the region is home to very few species. These include Arabian camel, Arabian jackal, sand antelope, Nubian ibex, stray hyena, caracal and red fox. However, the desert is home to reptiles such as lizards, snakes and deer.
Perhaps the most famous place on this list, the Sahara Desert is the hottest desert in the world and the third largest desert. The Sahara desert covers twelve countries and covers most of North Africa.
Like the Arabian Desert, the Sahara Desert is classified as sub-tropical and receives little rainfall each year. However, this is not always the case. The Sahara desert alternates between savanna grass and desert every 20,000 years. The region is said to have been fertile 5000 years ago, with average rainfall in the region ten times higher than it is now. This rotation is caused by Earth vibrations, which affect the location of the monsoon rains in North Africa and may cause the Sahara to turn green again in 15,000 years.
Although camels are domesticated animals found throughout the Sahara, especially due to their ability to survive for long periods of time with little water, many wild animals are found in the region. These include the Saharan cheetah, fennec fox, Dorcas gazelle, Adax antelope, red necked ostrich and African wild dog.
Learn About The Sahara Desert
As mentioned earlier, not all deserts have fine sand and hot temperatures. An example of this is the arctic polar desert located in the northern part of the world.
Polar deserts are characterized by their coldness, lack of rain and abundant snow. As many areas are under this ice, this area is another bad place for plants and animals. However, despite this, the arctic polar desert has a variety of animals such as arctic fox, arctic wolf, polar bear, caribou, snowy owl and moose. Some of these animals migrate between arctic tundra and arctic desert, where there is plenty of vegetation, while others are permanent in the desert.
In the late 1800s, many geographers held the mistaken belief of an open polar ocean in the area that now includes the Arctic polar desert. This theory is based on the idea that the northern ice can be pushed to reach an open and navigable sea around the North Pole.
Although this theory has not been rejected, at the expense of many lost expeditions in the Arctic, it may be achieved in the future due to the shrinking of the Arctic. In fact, there is finally an ice route through the Arctic between Europe and the Pacific Ocean.
What Animals Live In The Sahara Desert?
The Antarctic Polar Desert, which covers most of Antarctica, is the largest desert in the world. In fact, this single desert is larger than the Gobi Desert, the Arabian Desert and the Sahara Desert.
Although the two polar deserts have much in common in this respect, they can be distinguished by significant differences in plant life. Unlike its northern counterpart, no vegetation was identified in the Antarctic polar desert until the discovery of small insects in the 1970s. This southern desert has very high wind speeds, which combined with its dry climate can create hypersaline lakes. Some examples of these hypersaline waters are Lake Wanda and Don Juan Pond, which contain ten times more salt than seawater.
Like the Arctic, Antarctica has been the site of many adventurous expeditions over the years. In 1911, famous Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen defeated a British expedition led by Robert Scott and became the first person to reach the South Pole.
Another famous example is the Shackleton Expedition from 1914 to 1917, when a group of 28 men attempted to cross Antarctica by land. However, their ship got stuck in ice before sailing and the crew had to wade through the ice for months. Eventually eight of them make an epic 800-mile journey in a small open boat to reach an inhabited island and rescue the remaining twenty.

Desert life is an inhospitable environment for many species – it is always dry and sometimes hot. However, there are two different types of deserts: hot deserts and cold deserts. A cold desert like the Gobi Desert of East Asia is very dry, but it is usually no hotter than Paris in the spring, although winter is a bad omen ahead of them. But when we think of desert environments, hot deserts come to mind.
