Chemical pollution, or nutrient pollution, is a concern for health, environmental and economic reasons. This type of pollution occurs when human activities, especially the use of fertilizers on farms, cause chemicals to escape into waterways and eventually into the ocean. Increased concentrations of chemicals such as nitrogen and phosphorus in coastal oceans encourage the growth of algal blooms, which can be toxic to wildlife and harmful to humans. Marine litter includes all manufactured products, mostly plastics, that end up in the ocean. Garbage, storms and poor waste management contribute to the accumulation of this waste, 80% of which comes from terrestrial sources. Common types of marine debris include various plastic items such as shopping bags and drink bottles, cigarette butts, bottle caps, food wrappers and fishing gear. Plastic waste is particularly problematic as a pollutant because it is so durable. Plastic items can take hundreds of years to decompose.

Schmidt and his colleagues analyzed published data on plastic concentrations in 57 rivers of various sizes around the world. The researchers multiplied the concentrations by the flow of water in the rivers to calculate the total weight of plastic flowing into the ocean. They then entered the data into a model that compared the estimated weight of plastic waste generated per person per day along each river bank.
