Which Cell Phone Has The Largest Display – Remember when oversized smartphones were the exception and not the rule? A few years ago, devices with a display between 4.7 and 5 inches were considered normal, and anything larger was easily called a phablet. Android smartphones are impossible to find in 2021. As displays have grown, the design philosophy that inspired phablets has become the standard.
But how did we get here? With current weights in mind, we look back at some of the most popular big-screen devices that are blurring the lines between smartphone and tablet for the first time, opening the door for today’s pocket killers.
Which Cell Phone Has The Largest Display
The Galaxy Note series hasn’t always been Samsung’s version of a big-screen smartphone. In 2013, the Galaxy Mega wore its screen size as a badge of honor. The phone is over 167mm long and about 90mm wide, with enough room to accommodate a 6.3-inch display.

Mega was an absolute monster of her time. Its screen was smaller than its smartphone contemporaries like the HTCOne M7, Nexus 5, iPhone 5S and Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4. Another downside was the features. The Mega is powered by a Snapdragon 400 SoC and has only 8GB of internal storage. There was also a 5.8-inch version, but it was much more powerful than the larger counterpart.
Buyers were asked to pay ~$570 for the Galaxy Mega, which was a tough sell when the $700 Galaxy Note 3 was stylish, sleek and successful.
The big screen genre didn’t die after Mega. On the contrary, it seems to have gained popularity. A month later, Sony joined the revolution with the Xperia Z Ultra, an incredibly large phone with flagship features.
Smartphones Mostly Come With 6 Inch Screen Size And More Now
The Z Ultra then packed a 6.44-inch display, pushing the phone’s dimensions to 179mm in length and 92mm in width. If you have trouble using the Mega size, the Z Ultra is definitely not the device for you either.
Sony has combined this 1080p screen with a powerful Snapdragon 800 SoC, 16GB of storage and 2GB of RAM, making it a reliable hub for entertainment and productivity.
The Z Ultra is said to appeal to the “toyboy in all of us”. This is what modern smartphones really do.
Five years later, the Galaxy Mega and Xperia Z Ultra screens and smartphones have only gotten bigger. Xiaomi’s series of super-large devices ended with the 6.9-inch Mi Max 3. The phone was released in 2018, and was a new evolution of the flagship smartphone philosophy. It has provided users with an affordable device that features elegant design solutions regardless of its size.

For starters, the Mi Max 3 screen had minimal bezels on the sides and used aluminum construction instead of plastic. The phone was surprisingly practical for its size, with a fast fingerprint sensor on the back, dual SIM slots and a headphone jack. The 5,500mAh battery provided enough juice for up to two days, but that meant the phone was about 10 grams heavier than the Z Ultra.
While big screens always come with a big premium, the Mi Max 3 launched in China for around $250, opening the door to larger affordable devices on the market.
It wouldn’t be a big screen collection without talking about this absolute monster. We think it’s easy to call the HUAWEI Mate 20 X one of the most unique devices of 2018.
The selling point of the Mate 20 X was, and still is, its sheer size. Its increased dimensions were considered the highlight when it was next to its improved Mate 20 sibling. Combined with stereo speakers and a Kirin 980 chipset, the phone’s 7.2-inch display was the perfect entertainment system for those with pockets big enough.

While gaming performance is pretty average and the device can’t be used without a dock, we praised the Mate 20 X in our review, saying, “This is the closest phablet to smartphone performance and balance. The screen looks like a tablet.” You can still find the phone listed on the shelves, and it now has 5G support.
Flash forward to February 2020, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra debuted with a 6.9-inch display, the largest we’ve seen on a Samsung smartphone that doesn’t rotate or fold, and is huge for the company’s flagship. Straight. .
While the S20 Ultra’s display is larger than most of the devices listed above, it’s shorter and narrower than any of the others—a testament to advances in display and device design. This reportedly rendered the phone unusable. Its weight made it difficult to carry in the hand and pocket, but left enough room for a large 5,000 mAh cell, so users can enjoy great battery life even with a 120 Hz refresh rate on the screen.
The Galaxy S20 Ultra saw the super-sized smartphone perform a stunt that failed to tick all the right boxes for fanatics.

There are parallels between the bulky phones of the past and the foldable smartphones of today.
Larger smartphone screens are popular now, but it’s clear that companies haven’t completely pushed the limits of display size in experimental form factors. These include flexible phones like the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the HUAWEI Mate series, as well as dual-screen devices like the Surface Duo. Many manufacturers are getting into the folding game, so this will become the standard in the coming years.
These are all slightly bulky phones that further blur the distinction between a phone and a tablet. They may have expensive price tags and questionable durability, but that’s mostly true to the spirit of big smartphones, right?

The Galaxy S21+ is Samsung’s cheaper flagship phone, aiming to be the big-screen flagship version of its more expensive counterpart, the S21 Ultra.
The new Android phone has an RRP of £949, making it £200 cheaper than the flagship S21 Ultra, but if you look around you’ll find it for less than £750, which makes it much more attractive.
It has a metal and glass sandwich design, like most smartphones on the market, and unusually for a Samsung phone, the 6.7-inch screen is flat on the sides and not curved. However, the screen is bright, colorful and fast, and everything moves smoothly with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz.
