What Country Has The Highest Literacy Rate

What Country Has The Highest Literacy Rate

This project is about the current state of education around the world. It provides insights into global literacy and illiteracy rates by country – literacy growth and gender parity in education, changes in the share of GDP spent on education, and tells us which countries score high and which low in PISA science.

State Of Global Literacy Rates And Electricity Access

I believe education is a must to meet our basic survival needs. I had the opportunity to connect with people for whom I did not have the opportunity to go to school, either for financial reasons or because I was told that as women, they were only responsible for the family. Adults in developing countries are unable to attend school because of poverty, ill health, malnutrition or displaced by war and conflict.

In most cases, women in developing countries did not have access to education, either because of the patriarchal society or because of the political situation there. If only women in these poor countries had access to basic education, they could support themselves, contribute to their families and, above all, not be exploited.

I was aware that UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) is at the forefront of global literacy efforts by helping communities –

With this in mind, I was curious to see how literature develops in developed, developing and poor countries. I wanted to know which of these countries are still fighting for gender equality in education.

Literacy Statistics In The Us For 2023 (data & Facts)

I was looking for a dataset with consistent data on global literacy and illiteracy rates, by country and year – literacy rates, gender differences, percentage of GDP spent on education, and relevant PISA scores. However, this information was not available in any dataset. During the search I was able to find separate datasets for each of the parameters. The problem, however, was that the years between datasets were not consistent for all variables. For this purpose, I have decided to separate them from my analysis.

In this project, I used R studio to preprocess and visualize the data. Later, I used the Shiny app to host the visuals.

The application is easy to use in conveying insights through various types of graphics. Here is a screenshot of Shiny’s homepage –

When you click on the world map (created with Google GeoChart), the app displays an interactive map that, when you navigate through, contains the latest literacy data for each country. The next menu item on the left sidebar is Global Totals. Displays stacked area maps of global general literacy and literacy rates using ggplot. This page also shows the percentage of the most educated and illiterate countries in a bar chart for the last year.

The fourth menu item, Literacy by Country, contains a country selection dropdown that shows how literacy rates have evolved over the years. The fifth menu item is about gender parity in education. After selecting a country, a line chart of female and male literacy rates is displayed. These line charts are generated using googleVis.

The sixth menu item concerns the percentage change in GDP expenditure on education in 2005-2015. This interactive bar chart is color coded using the googleVis bar chart.

The seventh menu item is for PISA Science results. PISA is an international student assessment program run by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (http://www.oecd.org/pisa/aboutpisa/). This page displays a bar chart of 10 countries that can score high and low in science.

Literacy rates have improved over the last few centuries. In 1820, 12% of the world’s population read. In comparison, only 17% of the world’s population is still illiterate. The global literacy rate increased by 4% every 5 years from 1960 (42%) to 2015 (86%).

Cecil County Had The Highest Literacy Growth In Maryland. Here’s How We Did It.

The world map below shows that illiteracy remains a problem in Sub-Saharan Africa and parts of South Asia where the literacy rate is less than 50%.

Among the countries with the lowest levels of literacy, the literacy rate among 15-year-olds was lowest in Niger. Niger also has the largest gender gap. In Niger, women do not have access to education. The literacy rate in South Sudan is only 32%. It also presents a large educational gap between men and women. There are significant differences in education between Sub-Saharan African countries and the rest of the world.

As shown in the bar chart for countries with tertiary education, the names of Western countries are not shown. This is because the capitalized bar charts represent the most recent information for the year available in the country list.

Countries such as Brazil and Chile have made great strides in the last century. In 2015, Brazil’s literacy rate increased to 92.5%, while Chile’s literacy rate was 96.6%. China has also made great strides with a literacy rate of 96.3%.

Africa Hosts Eight Out Of The 10 Countries With The Lowest Literacy Rate Developmentaid

The overall literacy rate of young women is lower than the literacy rate of young men. But Singapore has made significant investments in overcoming gender parity. Men and women have equal access to education. This is also reflected in Singapore’s PISA score, with the highest PISA score of 556. Mexico has also made significant progress in overcoming the gender gap in education.

Slovakia, Poland and South Korea are among the top three countries that increased the percentage of expenditure on education in GDP in 2005-2015. To my surprise, the US only increased GDP investment in education by 4%.

Japan ranks second to Singapore in the PISA Science scores with a score of 538. The Dominican Republic and Brazil have the lowest PISA scores of the participating countries.

In the future, I would like to enrich my analysis by examining gaps in generational literature in different countries. Added visualization of math and reading scores in the PISA test.
